Townsend, Camilla
"After the Spanish conquest, the Nahuas of colonial Mexico learned the Roman alphabet and used it to transcribe oral performances of traditional histories of their peoples. These texts were called xiuhpohaulli in Nahuatl and are usually referred to as annals now. They were produced by indigenous people and for indigenous people, without regard to European interests, and they therefore provide the closest view of pre-Columbian historiography we are ever likely to find. Over the course of the colonial era, the annals changed with the times, but for over one hundred years their flexibility allowed for incorporating the new without obliterating the old. Usually these texts have been assumed to be anonymous, but Camilla Townsend has deduced authorship in the case of most of the key texts, and in so doing, has been able to place them securely in their proper contexts, thus rendering them more legible to modern readers. Each chapter begins with a selection from a key text, then considers who wrote it and why, before finally embarking on an exploration of its meanings.

Qiuming
"The full name of Zuo Zhuan is Chun Qiu Zuo Shi Zhuan, which is one of the core Confucian classics Thirteen Classics. Zuo Zhuan is the first detailed narrative chronicle in China. It is said that Zuo Qiuming, the historian of the State of Lu in the late Spring and Autumn Period, compiled it based on the Spring and Autumn in the history of the State of Lu. In the twenty-seventh year of Lu aigong (468 before), it mainly records important events and important figures in the political, economic, military, diplomatic and cultural aspects of various countries during the 254 years of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty. It is a valuable document for studying the history of my country before the Qin Dynasty. ."

Schaefer, Timo H
"Liberalism as Utopia challenges widespread perceptions about the weakness of Mexico's nineteenth-century state. Schaefer argues that after the War of Independence non-elite Mexicans - peasants, day laborers, artisans, local merchants - pioneered an egalitarian form of legal rule by serving in the town governments and civic militias that became the local faces of the state's coercive authority. These institutions were effective because they embodied patriarchal norms of labor and care for the family that were premised on the legal equality of male, adult citizens. The book also examines the emergence of new, illiberal norms that challenged and at the end of the century, during the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz, overwhelmed the egalitarianism of the early-republican period. By comparing the legal cultures of agricultural estates, mestizo towns and indigenous towns, Liberalism as Utopia also proposes a new way of understanding the social foundations of liberal and authoritarian pathways to state formation in the nineteenth-century world."
