"ABSTRAKTesis ini membahas penggunaan strategi penerjemahan istilah budaya dalam subtitle film 12 Years a Slave berbahasa Indonesia. Tujuan penelitian menimbang penggunaan strategi penerjemahan untuk menghasilkan terjemahan istilah budaya yang berkualitas berdasarkan aspek keaakuratan dan keberterimaan. Analisis disusun dengan menggunakan model komparatif dengan parameter terjemahan berkualitas sebagai kriteria utama keberhasilan pemilihan strategi penerjemahan. Pertama, menganalisis penggunaan strategi penerjemahan istilah budaya dengan memperhatikan makna istilah dan konteks cerita. Kedua, menimbang keberhasilan atau kagagalan strategi dalam menghasilkan terjemahan berkualitas. Penelitian ini menunjukkan tujuh jenis penggunaan strategi penerjemahan, yakni parafrasa, penambahan, eksplisitasi, peminjaman, kalki, modulasi, dan kompensasi. Dari 47 penggunaan strategi istilah budaya, 23 strategi berhasil menghasilkan terjemahan berkualitas, sedangkan 24 strategi gagal menghasilkan terjemahan berkualitas. Oleh karena itu, penggunaan strategi penerjemahan istilah budaya kurang berhasil menghasilkan terjemahan yang berkualitas.

ABSTRACTThe thesis analyses the usage of cultural term translation strategy in Indonesia subtitle of the film 12 Years a Slave. The purpose of this research is to assess the use of translations strategies in order to produce qualified cultural term translations based on the aspect of accuracy and acceptability. The analysis is built based on the comparative model with the parameter of quality translation as the main criteria to rate the successful usage of translation strategies. First, analysing the usage of strategies in translating cultural terms by noticing the meaning and the story context. Then, assessing the success and the failure of each strategy based on the production of qualified translation. The research shows seven types of translation strategy usage, which are paraphrase, addition, explication, loan, calque, modulation, and compensation. From 47 usages of cultural term translation strategies, 23 strategies succeed to produce qualified translations, whereas 24 strategies failed to produce qualified translations. Therefore, the usage of cultural term translation strategy is considered to be less succeeding in producing qualified translation."

"Beberapa tahun kebelakang, NBA telah memperluas mereknya secara global. Akibatnya, berita tentang NBA dikonsumsi setiap hari oleh orang-orang di seluruh dunia. Kemudian, berita tersebut diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa sasaran untuk memastikan bahwa penutur bahasa sasaran dapat memahami isi berita dengan sempurna. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menetukan prosedur penerjemahan yang dipakai untuk menerjemahkan istilah bola basket dalam artikel berita tentang NBA dari Bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia dan prosedur penerjemahan yang tidak dapat diterapkan untuk menerjemahkan istilah bola basket. Untuk menemukan jawabannya, artikel berita yang diterbitkan di situs resmi NBA dan MainBasket telah digunakan. Selanjutnya, istilah bola basket yang ada di artikel berita telah diidentifikasi dan dianalisis. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode analisis tekstual. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan adalah transposisi, modulasi, pemadanan berkonteks, eksplisitasi, penambahan, pengurangan, naturalisasi, dan penerjemahan kata pungutan. Prosedur penerjemahan yang tidak dapat diterapkan adalah pergeseran tingkat, pergeseran intrasistem, penerjemahan metafora, dan penerjemahan idiom. Prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan membuat istilah yang diterjemahkan menjadi akurat, serupa, dan mudah dipahami oleh pembaca bahasa sasaran baik penggemar maupun bukan penggemar bola basket. Tetapi, ada satu kesalahan dalam memilih prosedur penerjemahan untuk satu istilah. Namun, secara keseluruhan, prosedur penerjemahan yang dipilih tetap berhasil menyampaikan pesan yang benar dari teks sumber, menandakan penerjemahan yang baik.

Over the years, the NBA has been expanding its brand globally (Gardner & O’Brien, 2005). As a result, news regarding the NBA is consumed daily by people all over the world. The news is then translated into the target languages in order to ensure that the target language speakers understand the content of the news perfectly. This research aims to determine the translation procedures used in translating basketball terms in news articles about the NBA from English to Indonesian and the translation procedures that are inapplicable for translating basketball terms. To find the answer, news articles published on the NBA and MainBasket official websites were used. Then, the basketball terms that are included in the news articles were identified and analyzed. The research is conducted by using the textual analysis method. The research found that the translated procedures used are transposition, modulation, contextual conditioning, explicitation, addition, omission, naturalization, and borrowing. The translation procedures that are inapplicable are level shift transposition, intersystem transposition, metaphoric translation, and idiomatic translation. The applied translation procedures made the translated terms accurate, close, and easy to understand for the readers of the target language whether they are basketball fans or non-basketball fans. However, there is one mistake in choosing the translation procedure to translate a term. Yet, overall, the selected translation procedures still managed to successfully convey the correct message of the source text in the target text, indicating a good translation."

"ABSTRAKNovel Laskar Pelangi karya Andrea Hirata telah diterjemahkan ke dalam lebih dari tiga puluh bahasa. Dalam proses penerjemahan, istilah agama dapat menjadi kendala. Melalui metode deskriptif kualitatif, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan penerjemahan istilah-istilah agama dalam novel Laskar Pelangi ke dalam bahasa Inggris yang kemudian diterjemahkan lagi ke dalam bahasa Belanda. Dari hasil analisis dapat diketahui prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh penerjemah dalam menerjemahkan istilah-istilah agama tersebut. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa prosedur penerjemahan yang paling banyak digunakan dalam penerjemahan istilah-istilah agama, baik ke dalam bahasa Inggris maupun Belanda, adalah couplets, yaitu penggabungan dua prosedur penerjemahan yang berbeda.

ABSTRACTThe novel Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata has been translated into more than thirty languages. In the process of translation, religious terms can cause translation problems. By using qualitative descriptive method, this research aims to describe the translation of religious terms in the novel Laskar Pelangi into English which is then translated into Dutch. From the analysis, translation procedures used by translators in translating the religious terms can be identified. The results show that the most widely used translation procedure for translating religious terms both into English and Dutch is couplets, which combine two different translation procedures."

"Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian masalah penerjemahan yang bertujuan mendeskripsikan penerjemahan kata budaya dari novel Entrok ke dalam The Years of the Voiceless 2013. Penelitian dilakukan melalui ancangan kualitatif dan ancangan fungsional dengan model kausal komparatif yang diusulkan oleh Williams dan Chesterman untuk melihat prosedur penerjemahan kata budaya yang diterapkan penerjemah dalam mencapai skopos. Berdasarkan kategori kata budaya Newmark, peneliti ini mengidentifikasi 80 kata budaya yang dianggap representatif, meliputi kategori budaya materiel; kategori budaya sosial dan hiburan; dan kategori organisasi, adat, prosedur, aktivitas, dan konsep. Data dikumpulkan melalui penelitian perpustakaan dan wawancara dengan penerjemah. Setelah dikumpulkan, data itu dianalisis melalui teknik analisis kausal komparatif, yaitu dengan membandingkan kata budaya dalam TSu dan terjemahannya dalam TSa dan menganalisis prosedur penerjemahan yang diterapkan penerjemah untuk memenuhi skopos. Dalam penelitian ini ditemukan empat masalah penerjemahan, yaitu 1 konsep dan referen dalam BSu tidak ditemukan di dalam BSa, 2 referen dan konsep BSu tidak dileksikalkan di dalam BSa, 3 BSa kekurangan kata spesifik dalam BSu, 4 adanya perbedaan perspektif antara BSu dan BSa dalam melihat referen yang sama. Untuk mengatasi masalah-masalah penerjemahan itu, penerjemah menerapkan 9 prosedur penerjemahan yang meliputi eksplisitasi, generalisasi, harfiah, kalki, kuplet transferensi dan catatan kaki, transposisi dan padanan budaya, transposisi dan padanan deskriptif, padanan budaya, padanan deskriptif, padanan fungsional, dan transferensi. TSa memenuhi skoposnya melalui prosedur penerjemahan yang diterapkan dengan mempertimbangkan konteks. Berdasarkan ulasan pembaca, TSa dianggap berhasil mempertahankan gaya bahasa penulis dan memberikan nuansa budaya TSu. Pemberian penjelasan tambahan pada catatan kaki membantu pembaca memahami makna kata budaya TSu tetapi mengurangi kenyamanan dalam membaca.

This research on translation problems aims to describe the translation of cultural words from Entrok novel into The Years of the Voiceless 2013. This research was conducted through qualitative and functional approaches and was analyzed by using Williams and Chesterman's causal comparative model to see the translation procedures applied to fulfill the skopos. Based on Newmark's cultural words category, the researcher identified 80 cultural words that were categorized into 1 material culture 2 social culture and leisure and 3 organization, customs, procedure, activity, and concept. The data were collected through library research and interview with the translator. The research then used the causal comparative technique to compare the source text's cultural words with its translation and to analyze the translation procedures chosen by the translator to fulfill the skopos of TT.

There are four translation problems found in this research and they are 1 a reference and concept in SL having no reference and concept in TL, 2 a reference and a concept in SL not lexicalized in TL, 3 TL lacking of specific words, and 4 different perspective between SL and TL in viewing a reference. To deal with those translation problems, there are 9 procedures applied by the translator that include explicitation, generalization, literal, calque, couplet transference and footnote, transposition and cultural equivalent, transposition and functional equivalent, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, functional equivalent, and transference. TT fulfills its skopos through the translation procedures applied by considering the ST's context. According to the review of TT readers, TT is considered succeed to maintain the writer's language of style and give the nuance of ST's culture. The footnote also helps TT readers to understand ST cultural words but minimizes readers'comfort in reading."

"Film merupakan sarana hiburan kehidupan sehari-hari yang sering dijumpai. Di zaman digital ini, banyak diciptakan platform baru untuk menonton film dari berbagai belahan dunia, salah satunya adalah aplikasi bernama “Netflix”. Pada aplikasi ini terdapat film dari berbagai negara yang memiliki takarir bahasa Indonesia. Pada penelitian ini, data diambil dari takarir film aplikasi Netflix, yaitu pada film yang berjudul Mijn Beste Vriendin Anne Frank yang berbahasa Belanda. Data dianalisis untuk melihat metode penerjemahan apa yang digunakan. Penilaian tingkat keterbacaan penerjemahan juga dilakukan pada metode penerjemahan yang paling banyak dan sedikit. Terjemahan takarir film Mijn Beste Vriendin Anne Frank yang memiliki banyak dialog singkat ini diterjemahkan dengan 8 metode penerjemahan, yaitu metode kata demi kata, harfiah, setia, semantik, komunikatif, idiomatik, bebas, dan adaptasi. Dari 8 metode tersebut, metode penerjemahan setia paling banyak digunakan, sementara metode idiomatik paling sedikit. Kedua metode tersebut memiliki tingkat keterbacaan yang sama tinggi. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa metode penerjemahan disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan demi menyampaikan makna yang akurat.

Currently, film is a means of entertainment in everyday life that is often found because it has many fans. Many new platforms have been created in this modern era for watching movies from many parts of the world with many language translations, one of which is an application called "Netflix". In this application there are films from various countries that have Indonesian subtitles with subtitles. In this study, data was taken from subtitles for the Netflix application, namely a film entitled “Mijn Beste Vriendin Anne Frank”. The research data comes from Dutch and Indonesian subtitles on the Netflix movie streaming platform. An analysis was done to determine which method had the most and least frequency used in the “Mijn Beste Vriendin Anne Frank” film along with an assessment of the readability of the translation, which was also carried out on the most and least used translation method in the “Mijn Beste Vriendin Anne Frank” film. Subtitle translation of the film “Mijn Beste Vriendin Anne Frank” which has many short dialogues has as many as 8 methods used, namely the word for word, literal, loyal, semantic, communicative, idiomatic, free, and adaptation method. Of the 8 methods, there is the loyal translation method which is most widely applied in this film and the idiomatic method which is the least used. The two methods in this film have the same high level of legibility. In order to convey an accurate meaning from the existing film scenario, the frequency of the translation method is adjusted to the needs."

"Penelitian ini membahas jenis-jenis reduksi yang dilakukan dalam takarir berbahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris untuk teks sumber berbahasa Jerman dan menganalisis faktor linguistik yang menyebabkan perbedaan tingkat reduksi antara kedua takarir. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode kualitatif melalui studi pustaka dengan korpus data takarir bahasa Indonesia dan takarir bahasa Inggris dari Deutsche Welle untuk pidato Angela Merkel pada acara Haushaltsgesetz 2021 tentang pembatasan kegiatan masyarakat menjelang Natal 2020. Hasil penelitian menggunakan klasifikasi reduksi teks dalam takarir dari Díaz Cintas dan Remael (2020) menunjukkan bahwa terdapat jenis reduksi parsial dan total dalam level kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat yang ditemukan dalam kedua takarir dengan hasil perbandingan bahwa takarir bahasa Indonesia mengalami lebih banyak reduksi dibandingkan takarir bahasa Inggris. Secara linguistik, hal ini disebabkan oleh perbedaan tata bahasa dan leksikal antara bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Jerman yang lebih distingtif dibandingkan dengan perbedaan tata bahasa dan leksikal antara bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Jerman.

This study discusses the types of reduction found in Indonesian and English subtitle for German source text and analyses linguistic factors that cause differences in the level of reduction between the two subtitles. The research was conducted using a qualitative method through literature study with a corpus of data on Indonesian subtitle and English subtitle produced by Deutsche Welle for Angela Merkel’s speech at the Haushaltsgesetz 2021 event regarding restrictions on community activities before Christmas 2020. Using text reduction classification in subtitles from D'az Cintas and Remael (2020), this study shows that there are types of partial and total reduction in word, phrase, clause, and sentence level found in the two subtitles, with the comparison result that the Indonesian subtitle has more reduction than English subtitle. Linguistically, this is caused by the grammatical and lexical differences between Indonesian and German that are more distinct than the grammatical and lexical differences between English and German."

"ABSTRAKDisertasi ini menyingkap strategi, ideologi, metode, dan teknik penerjemahan ungkapan sapaan bahasa Inggris-Amerika dan ungkapan sapaan bahasa Indonesia serta budaya kebahasaan yang terlibat di dalam penerjemahan. Penelitian kualitatif ini menggunakan tiga novel Amerika beserta terjemahan bahasa Indonesianya dan wawancara dengan penerjemah serta narasumber lain. Didukung oleh teori penerjemahan, ungkapan sapaan, dan budaya kebahasaan, penelitian ini menemukan dua ideologi penerjemahan yang berhulu pada strategi penerjemahan pemancaan (foreignization) dan pelokalan (domestication). Di samping itu, juga ditemukan tujuh metode penerjemahan dan dua puluh empat teknik penerjemahan serta budaya kebahasaan yang menyangkut kuasa (power) dan solidaritas (solidarity).

ABSTRACTThis dissertation reveals the translation strategies, ideologies of translation, translation methods, and translation techniques of American-English forms of address into their Indonesian translations within linguistic culture involved in the translation. This qualitative research employs three American novels with their translation versions and interviews with their translators and other resource persons. Through the theories of translation, forms of address theories, and linguistic culture, the research findings indicate that two ideologies of translation: foreignization and domestication. Besides, it is also found that there are seven methods of translation with twenty four techniques of translation and linguistic culture relating to power and solidarity."

"Suatu teks dapat dimaknai dan dipahami berbeda tergantung konteks serta kemampuan kognitif pendengar atau pembaca. Keimplisitan dan kerancuan di dalam suatu teks dapat disiasati dengan eksplisitasi dalam teks sasaran sehingga menghasilkan sebuah teks yang lebih mudah dipahami. Sementara itu, eksplisitasi kerap dikaitkan atau bahkan disamakan dengan penambahan (addition). Penelitian ini membahas eksplisitasi dalam terjemahan film kartun pendek berbahasa Jerman Nichtlustig karya Joscha Sauer untuk melihat bagaimana eksplisitasi ditampilkan dalam takarir berbahasa Inggris. Data penelitian dianalisis menggunakan konsep Explicitness as Processability dalam eksplisitasi menurut Pál Heltai (2005). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan membandingkan takarir teks sumber (TSu) berbahasa Jerman dan teks sasaran (TSa) berbahasa Inggris. Analisis dilakukan dengan melihat implikatur, perbedaan leksikal, perbandingan morfem, dan konteks percakapan. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan tiga jenis eksplisitasi dalam kartun Nichtlustig, yaitu eksplisitasi dengan addition dalam delapan data, eksplisitasi dengan replacement dan spesifikasi dalam tujuh data, dan eksplisitasi dalam bentuk gabungan dalam delapan data.

A text can be interpreted and understood differently depending on the context and cognitive abilities of the audience or reader. Implicitness and ambiguity in a text can be overcome by making it explicit in the target text, making it easier to understand. Meanwhile, explicitation is often associated or even equated with addition. This research discusses explicitation in the translation of the German short cartoon movie Nichtlustig by Joscha Sauer to see how explicitation is displayed in the English subtitles. The research data was analyzed using the concept of Explicitness as Processability in explicitation according to Pál Heltai (2005). This research uses a descriptive qualitative method by comparing the subtitle of the source text (ST) in German and the target text (TT) in English. The analysis looked at implicatures, lexical differences, morpheme comparisons, and conversational context. The research findings show three types of explicitation in Nichtlustig, namely explicitation with addition in eight data, explicitation with replacement and specification in seven data, and explicitation in combined form in eight data."

"Penggunaan argots memiliki hubungan yang erat dengan kehidupan di daerah pinggiran kota-kota Prancis dan telah diangkat menjadi tema oleh banyak film salah satunya adalah “Banlieusards”. Diterjemahkan ke bahasa Indonesia dalam bentuk teks takarir, ditemukan kesenjangan ketika menerjemahkan fenomena bahasa itu. Artikel ini membahas tentang strategi penerjemahan yang diterapkan dalam menerjemahkan argots dan tingkat kesepadanan yang dihasilkan. Metode kualitatif dengan studi kepustakaan digunakan dalam melakukan penelitian. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasikan solusi apa saja yang diterapkan oleh penerjemah ketika menghadapi masalah dalam penerjemahan, yaitu argots dan bagaimana tingkat kesepadanannya dalam bahasa Indonesia. Teori yang digunakan dalam artikel ini adalah teori strategi penerjemahan takarir oleh Gottlieb (1992) dan kesepadanan penerjemahan oleh Kade (1968). Berdasarkan hasil analisis, ditemukan bahwa strategi yang paling banyak digunakan adalah paraphrase dan hal ini menunjukkan pemahaman penerjemah mengenai bahasa dan budaya Prancis juga Indonesia. Akan tetapi, dari segi kesepadanan penerjemah gagal menunjukkan nuansa penggunaan argots oleh para penduduk banlieue yang merupakan salah satu pembentuk identitas mereka. Hal ini ditandai dengan approximate equivalence yang mendominasi. Makna dan konteks penggunaan argots tersebut hilang dalam proses penerjemahan, sehingga penonton tidak terpaparkan fenomena bahasa yang terjadi.

The usage of argots (slang) is very significant and present in the everyday life of France’s banlieue and a lot of filmmakers have been inspired to use it as a theme in their works, one of those works is “Banlieuesards”. Problem arises in translating that phenomenon into Indonesian in the form of subtitles. This article is going to talk about the strategy of translating argots and the result of the equivalence. This article used qualitative method and literary study during its research. The goal of this article is to identify what kind of solution that can help the translator when they’re facing problems in translating argots into Indonesian and the degrees of its equivalence. Gottlieb’s (1992) theory about the strategy of translating subtitles and Kade’s theory of translation equivalence (1968) were used in this article. According to the analysis, the most used strategy in translating is paraphrasing and this shows the translator’s knowledge in the languages and cultures of both countries, Indonesian and French. However from the perspective of equivalence, the translator failed in translating the nuance of argots that holds an important role in creating the identity of the people of banlieue. This is signified by the approximate equivalence that dominates the end product. The meaning and the context is lost in the process of translating, therefore viewers did not get exposed to this language phenomenon."
