"Latar belakang: Kehilangan gigi dapat menyebabkan terganggunya kemampuan mastikasi sehingga dapat mempengaruhi kesehatan umum dan kualitas hidup individu. Pemakaian gigi tiruan sebagian lepasan akrilik yang sesuai dengan klasifikasi kehilangan gigi dapat membantu mengembalikan fungsi gigi yang hilang, sehingga diharapkan mampu meningkatkan kemampuan mastikasi. Namun, tidak semua pengguna gigi tiruan memiliki kemampuan mastikasi yang lebih baik setelah menggunakan gigi tiruan.
Tujuan: Menganalisis pengaruh pemakaian gigi tiruan sebagian lepasan akrilik berdasarkan klasifikasi Kennedy terhadap kemampuan mastikasi, menganalisis hubungan antar kelas pada klasifikasi Kennedy terhadap kemampuan mastikasi, menganalisis pengaruh faktor sosiodemografi usia,jenis kelamin, tingkat pendidikan terhadap kehilangan gigi dan kemampuan mastikasi.
Metode: Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan desain cross sectional pada 30 pasien RSKGM Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Indonesia berusia 20 tahun ke atas yang baru menggunakan gigi tiruan sebagian lepasan akrilik. Dilakukan pencatatan diri subjek serta wawancara pengisian kuesioner kemampuan mastikasi.
Hasil penelitian: Pemakaian gigi tiruan sebagian lepasan akrilik pada kehilangan gigi berdasarkan klasifikasi Kennedy diketahui memiliki pengaruh p=0,00 terhadap kemampuan mastikasi. Gigi tiruan sebagian lepasan akrilik kelas 1 dan kelas 2 Kennedy, kelas 2 dan kelas 3 Kennedy, kelas 2 dan kelas 4 Kennedy memiliki pengaruh dengan kemampuan mastikasi. Tidak terdapat pengaruh antara faktor sosiodemografi usia,jenis kelamin, tingkat pendidikan, dan tingkat pendapatan terhadap kemampuan mastikasi.
Kesimpulan: Terdapat pengaruh pemakaian gigi tiruan sebagian lepasan akrilik berdasarkan klasifikasi Kennedy terhadap kemampuan mastikasi.

Background: Tooth loss can cause disruption of masticatory ability and may affect patient's general health and quality of life. The use of acrylic removable partial denture based on the classification of tooth loss may restore the oral function, which is expected to increase patient's masticatory ability. However, not all denture wearers have better masticatory ability after using the removable partial denture.
Objectives: To analyze the effect of removable partial denture wearing based on Kennedys classification towards masticatory ability, correlation between each class on Kennedy's classification towards masticatory ability, and the effect of sociodemographic factors age, gender, educational level toward tooth loss and masticatory ability.
Methods: Cross Sectional Study was conducted on 30 patients of RSKGM Faculty of Dentistry University of Indonesia aged 20 years and over who just used removable partial denture. Subjects personal data were obtained, and interview for masticatory ability was conducted.
Results: There was significant difference p 0,00 between removable partial denture wearing on tooth loss based on kennedys classification towards masticatory ability. Kennedy class 1 and 2, class 2 and 3, class 2 and class 4 removable partial denture have significant difference with masticatory ability. There was no significant difference between sociodemographic factors age, gender, educational level, income level toward tooth loss and masticatory ability.
Conclusion: The use of removable partial denture based on Kennedys classification may increase patients masticatory ability.

"Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh lama perendaman denture adhesive cream terhadap kuat rekat resin akrilik polimerisasi panas. Krim pada plat akrilik direndam dalam akuades selama 15 detik, 30 detik, dan 60 detik, kemudian kuat rekat diukur dengan alat PASCO-Economy Force Sensor CI-6476. Uji analisis statistik menggunakan Anova one-way. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan Kuat rekat meningkat dengan p<0,05 pada perendaman selama 15 detik dan 30 detik, sedangkan kuat rekat menurun dengan p<0,05 pada perendaman selama 60 detik. Disimpulkan bahwa krim yang direndam dalam akuades lebih dari 30 detik tidak dapat meningkatkan kuat rekat resin akrilik polimerisasi panas.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of immersion time of denture adhesive cream in distilled water to the acrylic resin's adhesive strength. Cream on acrylic plate was immersed in distilled water for 15 seconds, 30 seconds, and 60 seconds. Adhesive strength was measured by PASCO-Economy Force Sensor CI-6476. Statistic analysis using one-way ANOVA showed that adhesive strength were significantly increased after immersion in 15 seconds and 30 seconds, and significantly decreased after immersion in 60 seconds. It was concluded that denture adhesive cream couldn't increase the acrylic resin's adhesive strength after immersed more than 30 seconds."

"An experimental laboratory study has been conducted to investigate the effect of temporary zinc oxide eugenol cement on the transverse strength of self-cure acrylic resin. Two groups of resin plates 20x9x1 mm in dimensions were incorporated in the study. Each groups consisted of 31 specimens. On the first group was applied a 0.1 mm thickness of temporary zinc oxide eugenol cement on acrylic which is only partially polymerized. The time we establish here was 30 minutes, thus the zinc oxide eugenol cement was applied 30 minutes following the beginning of the mix.
After being stored in a incubator with the temperature set at 37°C for 7 days in water, all the specimens were subjected to load by Shimadzu machine with cross head speed of 0.05 inch/min- Results were analyzed with T-test showing that the two groups differed significantly. It was observed that zinc oxide eugenol cement decreases the transverse strength of self-cure acrylic resin significantly By mathematical equation, 0-03 mm increase in thickness in the experimental group might produce the same strength as the control group."

"Latar Belakang: Prevalensi denture stomatitis pada pengguna gigi tiruan dengan basis cukup tinggi.
Tujuan: Mengamati pengaruh kekasaran bahan basis gigi tiruan terhadap jumlah koloni Streptococcus mutans.
Metode: Kekasaran spesimen diukur menggunakan surface roughness tester. Spesimen dicelupkan ke dalam eppendorf tube modifikasi berisi Streptococcus mutans dengan durasi inkubasi 12 jam dan 24 jam. Data dianalisis dengan Korelasi Bivariat (Pearson).
Hasil: Terdapat hubungan kuat positif antara pemolesan bahan basis gigi tiruan dengan jumlah koloni Streptococcus mutans.
Kesimpulan: Penurunan nilai kekasaran permukaan setelah dilakukan pemolesan pada bahan basis gigi tiruan metal, resin akrilik, dan valplast, akan diikuti dengan penurunan jumlah koloni Streptococcus mutans.

Introduction: The prevalence of denture stomatitis is high in denture wearers.
Objectives: The objective of this study is to observe the effect of surface roughness of denture base materials to the amount of Streptococcus mutans.
Methods: Surface roughness was measured by using surface roughness tester. Specimens were dipped into the eppendorf tube containing Streptococcus mutans and incubated for 12 and 24 hours. Statistical analysis was conducted by Bivariate Correlation (Pearson).
Results: There is a strong positive correlation between polishing denture base material with the amount of Streptococcus mutans.
Conclusion: The decrease in the value of surface roughness after polishing the denture base metal, acrylic resin, and valplast is followed by the decrease in amount of Streptococcus mutans.

"Polymerization of a self acrylic resin often done improperly. In daily practice, some put in room temperature water, some in warm water, but many of them left it in the open air. In the dental laboratory, a pressure cooker was used in order to get a better result. However, many clinicians did not like to use it due to the cost and inconveniency. In order to get an effective and less expansive equipment, a simple 'Mini Pressure Chamber-45' (Alat Tekan Mini-45) was developed. It wa made from a 4 inch PVC (about 10 cm in diameter). The mechanism of this equipment was to give a pressure to the resin during polymerization through a valve which was connected to the dental compressor. The pressure given was about 1 kg/cm2, and it was given in 5 minutes. The purpose of this study was to show the effectiveness of MPC-45 in reducing the porosity of the self cure acrylic resin in compare to the other kind of treatment. There were 5 groups of treatment and each group consisted of 30 specimen. In group 1, the samples were put in the open air during polymerization. In group 2, samples were dipped in the room temperature water, and in group 3 samples were dipperd in warm water (40.1°C). In group 4, samples were dipped in a pressure cooker for 10 minutes. In group 5, samples were dipped in MPC-45 under 1 kg/cm2 pressure for 5 minutes. The result showed that MPC-45 was the most effective method in reducing the porosity of the self-cure acrylic resin."

"Latar Belakang: Mastikasi terdiri dari proses penghancuran dan pencampuran makanan menjadi bolus yang siap ditelan. Kemampuan mastikasi dapat dievaluasi secara subjetif dan objektif. Evaluasi kemampuan mastikasi secara objektif dapat dilakukan dengan banyak metode, antara lain dengan color-changeable chewing gum dan gummy jelly. Color-changeable chewing gum dapat mengukur kemampuan mastikasi dalam pencampuran makanan. Gummy jelly dapat mengukur kemampuan mastikasi dalam penghancuran makanan. Color-changeable chewing gum dikatakan cocok mengukur kemampuan mastikasi pada semua golongan pasien, sedangkan gummy jelly dikatakan kurang cocok digunakan pada kelompok pasien dengan kemampuan mastikasi yang terkompromis. Penelitian lain mengatakan terdapat korelasi antara pengukuran kemampuan mastikasi dengan kedua bahan tersebut. Kemampuan mastikasi dapat dipengaruhi oleh faktor usia, jenis kelamin, indeks, massa tubuh, laju alir saliva, pH saliva, waktu pengunyahan , dan ambang batas penelanan.
Tujuan: Menganalisis perbandingan kemampuan mastikasi pada pemakai gigi tiruan lengkap dan pasien bergigi lengkap dengan menggunakan color-changeable chewing gum dan gummy jelly serta faktor yang mempengaruhinya.
Metode: Subjek penelitian 40 pasien pemakai gigi tiruan lengkap dan 40 pasien bergigi lengkap, dilakukan pengukuran kemampuan mastikasi dengan color-changeable chewing gum sebanyak 30,45, dan 60 stroke pengunyahan, pengukuran menggunakan gummy jelly sebanyak 10,20, 30 stroke, dan ambang batas penelanan, dan pemeriksaan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya.
Hasil: Kemampuan mastikasi pasien bergigi lengkap lebih tinggi dari pasien pemakai gigi tiruan lengkap (p<0,05) pada pengukuran menggunakan color-changeable chewing gum dan gummy jelly. Terdapat korelasi antara pengukuran kemampuan mastikasi menggunakan kedua bahan tersebut. Tidak terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara kemampuan mastikasi dengan faktor usia, jenis kelamin, indeks massa tubuh, laju alir saliva, pH saliva, waktu pengunyahan, dan ambang batas penelanan.
Kesimpulan: Kemampuan mastikasi pasien pemakai gigi tiruan lengkap lebih rendah dari pasien bergigi lengkap. Terdapat korelasi pengukuran kemampuan mastikasi menggunakan color changeable chewing gum dan gummy jelly.

Background: Mastication consists of comminuting and mixing food into a bolus and finally swallowed. Masticatory performance can be measures either subjectively or objectively.Various objective methods for evaluating masticatory function were introduced. Among them are using gummy jelly and color-changeable chewing gum. Color-changeable chewing gum can measure mastication ability in mixing food, while gummy jelly can measure ability in comminuting food. Mixing ability test using color changeable chewing gum was said to be suitable in all variations of dental status, while comminuting ability test was less suitable in group with compromised masticatory performance. In other research, the result showing correlation between both tests. Masticatory performance can be affected by factors such as age, gender, body mass index, salivary flow rate, saliva pH, chewing time, and swallowing threshold.
Objective: The aim of our study was to analyze masticatory performance as measured with gummy jelly and color-changeable chewing gum between complete denture wearers and dentate patients, and to analyze the correlation between masticatory performance with other factors such as age, gender, bodymass index, salivary flow rate, saliva pH, chewing time,and swallowing threshold.
Methods: 40 complete denture wearers and 40 fully dentate subject participated in this study. Two test food were used to evaluate masticatory performance: gummy jelly and color-changeable chewing gum. Subject was instructed to chew on the color-changeable chewing gum in 30, 45, and 60 strokes, and to chew gummy jelly in 10, 20, and 30 strokes. We also measure subjects swallowing threshold with gummy jelly.
Results: There was significant differences (p<0,05) between masticatory performance as measured with gummy jelly and color-changeable chewing gum in dentate subjects and complete denture wearers, which the first group had a better result. There was correlation between the measurement using both test foods. There was no correlation between masticatory performance with other factors such as age, gender, body mass index, salivary flow rate, saliva pH, chewing time, and swallowing threshold.
Conclusion: Masticatory performance in complete denture wearers is inferior compared to natural dentition subjects. There is correlation between masticatory performance measurement using gummy jelly and color-changeable chewing gum.

"Tujuan : Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendapatkan alat ukur kemampuan mastikasi serta menganalisa hubungan antara kemampuan mastikasi dengan kualitas hidup yang berkaitan dengan kesehatan gigi dan mulut pada pra-lansia dan lansia wanita yang hidup di suatu komunitas.
Latar belakang : Kehilangan gigi merupakan kondisi yang sering ditemukan pada pra-lansia dan lansia yang dapat mempengaruhi fungsi mastikasi. Penilaian fungsi mastikasi dapat dilakukan secara subyektif maupun obyektif. Penilaian mastikasi secara subyektif perlu dilakukan untuk menilai persepsi individu terhadap kemampuan mastikasinya. Alat ukur berupa kuesioner merupakan salah satu metode yang dapat digunakan untuk menilai kemampuan mastikasi. Kemampuan mastikasi merupakan salah satu faktor yang berperan dalam fungsi stomatognatik dan pada kesehatan individu secara umum.
Metode : Subjek penelitian adalah 165 wanita usia 45 tahun ke atas yang berdomisili di kecamatan Bekasi Timur, kotamadya Bekasi, Jawa Barat. Subyek diminta untuk menjawab kuesioner kemampuan mastikasi dan kuesioner dampak kesehatan gigi dan mulut terhadap kualitas hidup. Dilakukan pemeriksaan intraoral untuk melihat jumlah gigi sisa, serta kontak antara gigi-geligi asli.
Hasil: Didapat suatu alat ukur kemampuan mastikasi berupa kuesioner yang valid dan reliabel dengan indeks Eichner sebagai baku emas. Dari analisis ditemukan hubungan signifikan antara kemampuan mastikasi dengan kualitas hidup yang berkaitan dengan kesehatan gigi dan mulut.
Kesimpulan : Alat ukur berupa kuesioner dapat digunakan untuk menilai kemampuan mastikasi. Kemampuan mastikasi merupakan fungsi stomatognatik yang penting dan dapat mempengaruhi kualitas hidup ditinjau dari aspek kesehatan gigi dan mulut.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to obtain masticatory assessment tool and to analyze the relationship between masticatory ability with oral health-related quality of life in preelderly and elderly women in a community.
Background : Tooth loss is a condition frequently found in pre-elderly and elderly which affects masticatory function. Masticatory function can be assessed subjectively or objectively. The assessment of subjective masticatory function is needed to evaluate an individual's perception of his/her masticatory ability. One of the methods to evaluate masticatory ability is by using assessment tool in questionnaire format. Masticatory ability is one of the factors that affect stomathognatic function and health in general.
Method : Subjects consist of 165 women age 45 and beyond, living in Bekasi Timur, West Java. Subjects were interviewed using masticatory ability and oral health-related quality of life questionnaires. Intraoral examination was carried out to see numbers of existing teeth and occlusal contact between the teeth.
Results : A valid and reliable masticatory ability assessment tool with Eichner index as golden standard was acquired. Statistical analysis showed a significant relation between masticatory ability and oral health-related quality of life in pre-elderly and elderly women.
Conclusion : An assessment tool in questionnaire format can be used to evaluate masticatory ability. Masticatory ability is an important aspect of stomathognatic function that affects oral health-related quality of life in pre-elderly and elderly women.

"Latar Belakang: Kemampuan mastikasi merupakan kemampuan untuk memecah partikel makanan agar mudah dicerna tubuh sehingga berperan dalam pemenuhan nutrisi. Penggunaan gigi tiruan lepasan diperlukan ketika seseorang mengalami kehilangan gigi karena dapat mengurangi kemampuan mastikasi. Berbagai faktor lain juga dapat mempengaruhi kemampuan mastikasi.
Tujuan: Menganalisis hubungan berbagai faktor terhadap kemampuan mastikasi pemakai gigi tiruan lepasan.
Metode: Tiga puluh empat pemakai gigi tiruan lepasan (GTL, GTLT, dan GTSL) berpartisipasi dalam uji mastikasi dengan permen karet yang dapat berubah warna (Masticatory Performance Evaluating Gum Xylitol®) dengan desain potong lintang. Laju alir saliva dievaluasi dengan gelas ukur, dan ketinggian residual ridge diukur secara klinis menggunakan kaca mulut No.3 yang diberi ukuran mm.
Hasil: Ketinggian residual ridge (p=0,003) dan pengalaman memakai gigi tiruan (p=0,051) berperan terhadap kemampuan mastikasi. Faktor usia (p=1,000), jenis kelamin (p=0,711), laju alir saliva (p=0,400), jenis gigi tiruan (p=0,218), dan jumlah serta lokasi kehilangan gigi (p=0,097) tidak memberikan hubungan yang bermakna.

Background: Masticatory performance is the ability to breakdown food to facilitate digestion, and its role in nutrition is important. Removable dentures are used to rehabilitate loss of teeth, which could jeopardize masticatory performance. There are also various factors that affect masticatory performance.
Objective: To analyze the relationship between various factors and masticatory performance.
Method: Thirty four removable denture wearers (full dentures, single complete dentures, or partial dentures) participated in a cross-sectional study of masticatory performance using color-changeable chewing gum (Masticatory Performance Evaluating Gum Xylitol®). The volume of saliva were evaluated using measuring cups, and residual ridge heights were measured using modified mouth mirror no. 3 with metric measurements.
Result: Residual ridge height (p=0,003) and removable denture-wearing experience (p=0,051) had significant relationship with masticatory performance. Age (p=1,000), gender (p=0,711), saliva (p=0,400), denture types (p=0,218), the number and the location of missing teeth (p=0,097) did not have significant association with masticatory performance.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan kuat rekat geser dan Adhesive
Remnant Index (ARI) dua produk breket metal yang direkatkan dengan satu adesif.
Dua puluh gigi premolar atas manusia ditanam pada silinder PVC dengan resin
akrilik. Spesimen dibagi menjadi dua kelompok, kelompok A: breket metal 3B, Cina
+ Transbond XT; kelompok B: breket metal Protect, Cina + Transbond XT (3M,
Unitek, Amerika). Dihasilkan rerata kuat rekat geser 6,09 dan 7,91 MPa pada
kelompok A dan B (p<0,05) dan nilai ARI: 1 dan 2 pada kedua kelompok (p>0,05).
Disimpulkan bahwa dua kelompok memiliki nilai kuat rekat geser yang berbeda
bermakna dengan kegagalan ikatan bersifat kohesif

"Latar Belakang: Komponen terbesar pada indeks DMFT ialah kehilangan gigi dan terjadi paling banyak pada kelompok lansia. Kehilangan gigi dapat mempengaruhi kemampuan dalam mengunyah makanan sehingga berdampak pada kurangnya asupan nutrisi.
Metode: Metode potong lintang yang dilakukan di 4 Puskesmas di wilayah Jakarta Pusat, Jakarta Selatan dan Jakarta Timur. Jumlah subjek lansia ialah sebanyak 93 subjek dan didapatkan melalui teknik convenience sampling. Pada subjek dilakukan pemeriksaan intraoral, pengukuran antropometri BMI dan diwawancara menggunakan kuesioner Mini Nutritional Assessment MNA.
Hasil: Ditemukan bahwa 53,8 subjek masih memiliki jumlah gigi sebanyak 20 buah atau lebih. Sebanyak 55,9 subjek memiliki risiko terhadap malnutrisi. Hasil uji korelasi menunjukkan bahwa tidak terdapat hubungan yang bermakna antara jumlah gigi yang tersisa, gigi karies, gigi hilang, gigi yang ditambal dan kemampuan mastikasi p > 0,05 dengan status nutrisi.
Kesimpulan: Tidak terdapat hubungan antara status kesehatan gigi dan mulut dan kemampuan mastikasi terhadap status nutrisi pada lansia.

Background: The biggest component in DMFT index is tooth loss, and mostly occur in elderly. Tooth loss can affect the ability in chewing food then it may affect the lack of nutrition intake.
Methods: The cross sectional study was performed in 4 community health center in Central Jakarta, South Jakarta and East Jakarta. It was involving 93 elderly age ge 60. The sampling method was convenience sampling. Subjects were submitted to intraoral examination, anthropometric measurement BMI and as well as interview using Mini Nutritional Assessment MNA.
Results: 53,8 subjects have 20 or more sum of natural teeth. 55,9 subjects have risk at malnutrition. The results of correlation test showed that sum of natural teeth, decay teeth, missing teeth, filling teeth, and masticatory performance p 0,05 were not significantly correlated with nutritional status BMI and MNA.
Conclusion: There is no relationship between oral health status and masticatory performance with nutritional status in elderly.
