"Perbincangan tentang peristiwa 1965 mencapai fase baru ketika terjadi perubahan politik di negeri ini tahun 1998. Narasi tentang peristiwa 1965 tidak lagi tunggal. Muncul narasi baru yang direpresentasikan oleh film-film tentang tragedi 1965. Film-film ini muncul dalam konteks perfilman Indonesia yang belum menjadi sebuah industri dengan infrastruktur yang masih lemah, cukup ketat dikontrol negara melalui institusi sensor, memiliki sumber daya manusia terdidik di bidang film. Kondisi ini turut memberi warna terhadap proses produksi film-film yang menampilkan tema tragedi 1965.
Film-film yang menampilkan narasi baru ini memediasikan rekonstruksi atas ingatan yang ditindas selama lebih dari tiga dekade. Rekonstruksi atas ingatan yang ditindas membantu kita memahami kehidupan politik, sosial, budaya sebuah kelompok masyarakat. Dari ingatan individu dan kolektif dapat direkonstruksi tragedi kemanusiaan 1965/1966: bentuk dan derajat kekerasan serta luas cakupan tragedi yang terjadi saat itu. Rekonstruksi ini juga menjadi proses healing bagi para penyintas tragedi 1965 atas peristiwa traumatik yang terjadi di masa lalu. Film-film horor yang mengetengahkan tragedi 1965 sebagai narasi utama, mengkonstruksi tragedi 1965 sebagai situasi horor melalui kemunculan hantu yang membalas dendam kepada orang-orang yang telah menganiayanya.
The political change in 1998 has created a new phase in discussion on the 1965 Event & Tragedy. There exists a new narrative which is being represented by some of the Indonesian films. These films appeared in a Indonesian film industry context which has weak infrastructure, tightly controlled by the state, and has a well-educated film makers. These conditions, in turn, influence the production of narrative in the Indonesian films.
These films form new narrative which mediating a reconstruction of repressed memories. This reconstruction has become central to understand a group?s politics, economic, and cultural past. It gives important to know the tragedy of 1965/1966: the level of violence and the deep impact to the life of hundred thousands of people accused communist. On the other side, this reconstruction has clearly become a healing process for survivors of this tragedy as well as given new historical perspective for the younger generation."
