"This essential career guide equips new professionals and doctoral students with a robust foundation for a long and satisfying career in psychology and other behavioral health professions. Taking a proactive intervention prevention approach to career planning and building, contributors offer accessible guidelines and advice in core areas such as specialization and niche specialties, the market for services, cultural competence, ethically and legally sound practice, and personal competencies including self-care, the degree-to-career transition, and financial planning. The editors also break down the mental health field into discrete disciplines, each with its own trajectory for its future relevance and sustainability. By bringing this wide range of career information together, this book helps to set much-needed standards for professional development in a demanding, diversifying, and evolving field."

"A television program is ideal for making psychology a household word because it delivers multisensory communications directly into households, regardless of socioeconomics status or literacy levels. It can promote psychology respectfully, without introducing tabloid talk show sensationalism, distortions."

"The association of parental discipline and monitoring with the early conduct problems of 123 boys and girls was assessed in a highly disadvantaged, African American sample. Prospective analyses indicated that, after earlier conduct problems were controlled for, coercive parent discipline and poor parental monitoring at age 4½ were independent, reliable predictors of age 6 conduct problems for both boys and girls. The association of parental monitoring with later child conduct problems was mediated, in part, by parents' choice of higher risk schools for their children's kindergarten education. The association of family income with child conduct problems was mediated by parental discipline and monitoring. These models are consistent with previous research on older, European American, more advantaged, male samples, which supports the generality of the association of family processes with child conduct problems across child gender, age, and ethnicity."
