"Various endeavors to quest for ethnographic representation have been conducted to answer questions about authority and relationship between the ethnographer and its subject. This quest brought about issues of collaboration and reflexivity as important themes in the visual anthropology discourse. This paper is an effort to expose our experiences in doing anthropological research using documentary video. Collaboration, reflexivity and complicity are concepts that become our concern in a research project in Indramayu. What we did is a kind of possibility to create ethnographic representation through visual medium."

"In November 1967 the General Assembly United Nations adopted the declaration "to ensure the universal recognition in law and in fact of the principle of equality of men and women". That Declaration was known as the Declaration of the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women. One of the state ratified the declaration is Indonesia. The ratification was declared as Undang-undang No. 7/1984. After eight years declared, it would be still interesting to know how the law works in reality. Does anyone know about what happened and what is going on with the legal issues regarding women. This article tries to get some explanation about how far the declaration is known and what was done about it. Some law and social-political science students of University of Indonesia were interviewed. What they say, feel, and think about all of women issues in terms of knowing and understanding the declaration would be held in this small-scale research."

"Using Roland Barthes's semiotics as a tool of analysis, this article intends to find out the implications made by Disney's changes on this story of Chinese women and people in general. Barthes's multilevel semiotics shows how the same medium-the animation Mulan-could be viewed from different perspectives. Disney claimed that Mulan is a message on women's heroism. This is based on Disney's convictions that Mulan is an animation produced with "respect to women and non-Western peoples." Through feminist frame of thought and knowledge of the differences between the original Chinese and the Disney version, women experienced multilayered subordinations in the animation. The first subordination against women occurs when a person is born as a girl. Based on myths, society gives a set of characterizations to women, called the feminine character. The character is used as the basis to subordinate women and repress them. The next subordination against women occurs when the feminine character, having been applied to women for as long as they live (and taken for granted), is applied to a certain thing, person or group. Thus, whatever is regarded as having the feminine characteristics are placed in a subordinate position, and thus experience repression. Using the ethnographic approach, the writer finds that the viewers of Mulan could be categorized into three groups based on their meaning of Mulan: the "lover" group, the "ironists" group, and the "hater" group."

"This paper is an autoethnographic exploration which would like to show that culture is always in the process of constructing those that are present in various track events. Through the exposure of various stages of life and moments of encounters with Others, the author wants to confirm his argument on how culture is an arena of discourses that is continually constructed, in which also involves power relations between Self and Others. Using Abu Lughod?s approach and several contributions from philosophical thinking, the author would like to state that the theoretical journey and life trajectory is a continuity which shows the fundamental argument, that culture is an arena of contestation that is based on power relations between the self and the Other."

"This paper is based on the reflections of the life experiences of a woman that grew up within the cultures of the Pesantren. At first, this paper was merely for academic purposes that demanded reflective research. Most of the data was collected in a reasonably short amount of time in the last two months of 2010 by relying on life experience memories and enforced by data from results of observations, interviews and personal documents. This research tries to give an overview and becomes a small part of an effort to understanding how a human woman brought up within the cultures of the Pesantren interprets herself as a woman. A woman who deals with various feelings, thoughts, questions, concerns and expectations in between habits and habituations embedded in the existing culture. Although admittedly, this paper does not intend to give a generalization of the Pesantren culture, especially on the ways of how one ?grows into a woman? and the social consequences of the female self."

"This article will clarify political representation of exhibition at Ullèn Sentalu Museum, Monumen Jogja Kembali, and Affandi Museum. These three museums are considered as proponent of Yogyakarta?s identity as the central of Javanese culture, struggle city, and the barometer of Indonesian fine art. The issue then, is it true that in the exhibitions? at the three museums are appropriate with the identity of Yogyakarta, or in the contrary, the exhibitions have no correlation with this city?s identity discourse. There is a possibility that museum precisely bringing self-interest for specific purposes. Therefore, this paper needs to observe how the exhibitions at these museums were implemented. Through interpretive approach, the exhibition at the museum may be analogous similar with language phenomenon, and hence museum is considered as text that can be read and interpreted. Exhibition at the museum was developed within framework of thoughts (ideology), motives, and specific discourses, which all of these are articulated through a set of symbols (collection), that arranged with special layout procedure (display procedure). Thus, museum becomes ?political? since, in this perspective, museum has power over the formation of discourse through their exhibition."
