"This SIAM Classics edition is an unabridged, corrected republication of the work first published in 1977. It provides a compendium of applied aspects of ordering and selection procedures and includes tables that permit the practitioner to carry out the experiment and draw statistically justified conclusions. These tables are not readily available in other texts. Although more than 1000 papers and several books on the general theory of ranking and selection have been published since this book first appeared, the methodology is presented in a more elementary fashion, with numerous examples to help the reader apply it to a specific problem.
There is a dichotomy in modern statistics that distinguishes between analyses done before an experiment is completed and those done afterward. Ranking and selection methods are useful in both of these categories. The authors provide an alternative to the overused "testing the null hypothesis" when what the practitioner really needs is a method of ranking k given populations, selecting the t best populations, or some similar goal. That need and purpose is as important today as when the subject was first developed nearly 50 years ago."

"Multiple Decision Procedures: Theory and Methodology of Selecting and Ranking Populations provides an encyclopedic coverage of the literature in the area of ranking and selection procedures, summarizing and surveying in a unified manner a majority of more than 600 main references in the bibliography. It also deals with related problems, such as the estimation of unknown ordered parameters. A separate chapter is devoted to information about several tables available in the literature for carrying out various specific procedures. Examples are given in another chapter illustrating applications of these procedures in various practical contexts. Although several books have appeared to date in this area, many of them deal with specific aspects of the field and a limited number of topics. This book contains substantial material not discussed in other books.

Ranked Set Sampling is one of the sampling methods which can be applied in analysis of shrubs vegetation. This is because the method suits the homogeneous, population unintentionally formed, has low mobility kind of population; in which the borders and area can be determined. By using Ranked Set Sampling, unbiased estimator of mean population can be obtained. These estimations use the initial information of mean population estimator based on 1 cycle. In this paper, the estimated mean population that is obtained is used to calculate vegetation parameter value. Furthermore, the vegetation parameter value is used to obtain a value that can represent the domination of one species of plant over others. The obtained value is called Importance Value Index. The application of this method is performed as an illustration of determining the domination of shrubs species in Hutan Kota Wales Barat, Universitas Indonesia."
