"This article attempts to give a brief picture about the genre and themes in theDutch-Indies Literature from the VOC period. During the VOC-period, morethan six months was needed to embark on a journey by sea from the Netherlandsto Batavia. Undertaking this journey meant encountering many obstacles whichoccurred through the work of man as well as nature. In addition, a successfullanding on the shores of the East did not always ensure a friendly reception. Dueto these obstacles which they encountered, only a small number of those whohad set sail from Europe were able to return home safely. Most of those whomanaged to survive this long and dangerous journey to the land of spices, finallychose to stay and start a new life in the East. Some of these men, in an effort toestablish their new life, were able to make contact and build relationships withthe local women. This paved the way for the emergence of the Mestis culture,in which we find the elements of East and West."

"When the first technology of photography came to the Netherlands-Indies inthe nineteenth century, it was only used for government purposes and wasnot yet meant for public consumption. On the other hand, the rise of colonialtourism in the Netherlands-Indies in the early twentieth century required amedium for promotion. Photographs were the right choice because, as the sayinggoes, pictures could tell more than words. Photographs for colonial tourismpromotions were produced in various forms such as postcards, illustrations inmagazines and guide books, and were published by the colonial governmentas well as by private publishers. This article discusses the role of photographyin colonial tourism in the Netherlands-Indies and its influence in the process to?find Indonesia?. The sources used are taken from published postcard collections,magazines, guide books, and also published government archives."

"ABSTRAKDalam penelitian ini diungkapkan berbagai aspek berkenaan dengan situasi dan kondisi Jakarta (Batavia) masa Hindia Belanda, baik sebagai wilayah administratif maupun sebagai kota pusat pemerintahan kolonial selama kurun waktu sekitar satu seperempat abad. Selama itu telah terjadi perubahan dan perkembangan, baik dibidangpolitik, pemerintahan, penataan wilayah, ekonomi dan sosial budaya. Namun karena luas Serta kompleksnya permasalahan, maka penelitian ini memfokuskan diri pada perkembangan wilayah dan penduduk Jakarta ( Batavia ) dalam sistim pemenintahan kolonial, sebab perubahan sistim pemerintahan dan berkembangnya fungsi Serta kedudukan Jakarta ( Batavia ) dalam sitim pemerintahan kolouial menjadi Salah satualasan dalam penataan wilayah administratif dan berkembangnya jumlah penduduk. Sejauh mana perubahan-porubahan yang dimaksud telah berlangsung Serta keterkaitannya satu sama lain menjadi permasalahan yang dikaji dalam penelitian ini. Dengan demikian tujuan panelitian ini membermkan informasi berkenaan dengan perkembangan wilayah dan penduduk Jakarta ( Batavia ) pada kurun waktu tertentu sebagai sumbangan data dalam penu1isan sejarah Jakarta pada umumnya.Untuk menjawab permasalahan penelitian, selain penelitian kearsipan sebagai data utama, dilakukan telaah pustaka terutama terhadap buku-buku atau artikel-artikel yang memiliki relevandi dengan obyek yang dikaji. Dari penelitian ini diperoleh gwnbaran bahwa perkembangan wilayah dan penduduk Jakarta ( Batavia ) selama pemerintahan Hindia Belanda, selain dipengaruhi oleh sistim, pemerintahan yang ada, juga karena diintrodusirnya birokrasi mouern ( kolonial )diberlakukannya Sistim Tanam Paksa dan politik Etis."
