"ABSTRAK
This is a study of oral tradition on Mentawai family stories. The family stories relate to historical events and contemporary social issues occurred in the Mentawai Islands and affecting the Mentawai kin groups. The Mentawai family stories comprise significant elements defining different kin groups living on the Mentawai Islands. They are also an important source of information with regard to claims to ancestral land. The Mentawai family stories can furthermore be regarded as the kin groups? verbal form of identities. Therefore, to maintain the family stories is indispensable to Mentawai communities and the power of human memory plays an important part in maintaining and transmitting the significance of these verbal identities of the communities."

"Teaching Indonesian in formal schools today is regarded as a challenge by many Indonesian teachers. In a country like Indonesia, in which language situation is very complex due to many languages and dialects (and also the fast-growing English usage in big cities), this phenomenon can be understood. Since the country?s independence, there have been several curricula?one of them is Kurikulum Berbasis Kompetensi (competence-based curriculum), the newest being Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (Unit Level of Education-Based Curriculum). The latter seems to be regarded as the most ideal curriculum, because it can be adjusted to the regions? policy. The problems are that there are still Ujian Nasional (national examination) and that the ?readability? of the curriculum is still a big question for many teachers. This paper is focused on the elementary school teacher?s strategies on applying the curriculum. This paper also discusses the curriculum, some principles on language learning, and the emergence of literary matters."

"This paper examines some significant elements of the pig story (tiboi sakkoko). This tale contains crucial information about the collective identity, ancestors and historical events affecting particular Mentawai kin-groups. As families do not preserve their culture and traditions in written form, storytellers of kin-groups have narrated the pig story from generation to generation so as to preserve it carefully. In the course of time, storytellers establish particular ways of telling their stories so as to remember the content and plot of the stories easily. Through the pig story, members of kin groups also recollect their ancestral place of origin and plots of ancestral lands. The role of human memory is indispensable to recalling all these important elements. Therefore, this paper analyses memories of the past of different family generations. To achieve its aims, this paper also evaluates the roles of family stories in the culture and traditions of Mentawai society."

"In this paper, I examine the stories about the origins of the first inhabitants of
the Mentawai Islands. My aim is to understand the perspective of the local
community in seeing themselves in the particular place and space where they
live in the Mentawai Islands. In my opinion, a set of narrative as a story about
the origin of a group of people has a significant value for the development of
local communities and their culture. A collection of narratives is an important
source of information to understand the ideas of local communities in perceiving
their past, especially people who do not have a written tradition. Many of these
stories have not been studied thoroughly and on this occasion, I explore it in
more depth."

"People from Buton, Southeast Sulawesi, have for centuries migrated to Ambon for work, there forming one of the most prominent communities of 'pendatang' along with the Bugis. Since the beginning of the recent conflicts in Maluku, official figures indicate that over 160,000people have returned to Buton (previous population 450,000) as refugees. This paper discusses the identity of these refugees and how the term 'refugee' may be misleading. Some of the 'refugees', who often ask to be referred to as 'returned migrants', had retained strong connections with their villages in Buton while they were living in Ambon. Their integration back into Butonese society after their flight from the conflict in Ambon poses, however, a number of serious challenges, especially for those born in Ambon. Having always been called 'Butonese' in Ambon, the returned migrants are often referred to as 'Ambonese' after their return to Buton and they often find it hard to adjust to life in Buton. This paper is based on fieldwork currently being undertaken in the village of Boneoge, Buton. I will discuss some aspects of the lives of the returned migrants in Buton, including their interactions with other Butonese people, as well as some of their perspectives on their own experiences. In Buton; perspectives on their identity are thus being expressed and contested through issues such as use of local languages, dance parties, and contested land rights. Their memories of life in Ambon, and of the conflict, also play a role in their constructions of identity, and in how they respond to challenges intheir lives in Buton now. Here memory is seen as a constructive process, which is culturally influenced, structured by narratives, and adapted to a context."
