"The Bunaq are a Papuan language-speaking people straddling the border of Indonesian West Timor and independent East Timor. This paper looks at the history of the Bunaq as a ?border? people in Timor. ?Border? is interpreted here in two ways, as referring to: (i) a political division, the boundary line separating one country from another, and (ii) a linguistic division, the distinguishing line between Papuan and Austronesian languages. I examine the effect that the Bunaq position at the political and linguistic borders of Timor has had on the people and their language."

Der andere Blick, Eine deutsche Leidenschaft namens Nudelsalat, dan Eine Germanistin im Haus erspart den Psychiater are three short stories written by Rafik Schami, an immigrant from Syiria who lives in Germany. Rafik Schami has a unique writing style. He often uses frame narrative technique or a story within a story technique for his works. It can be analyzed by using narratology. In Schami's stories, we will see the perspective from ich character as an immigrant toward cultures and society in Germany. There were some cultures which at the first he considered as something fremd (strange), then it turned out to be a part of him or be Eigenes, after he adapted to the culture in Germany. This can be seen through verstehen process from ich character toward the German culture.

"The Timor-Alor-Pantar (TAP) language family has a special place in South-East
Asian linguistics; its members make up the western extreme of the Papuan
language sphere. Along with an exhaustive bibliography of works on the
TAP languages, this paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the ongoing
documentation of the TAP language family in terms of both linguistic description
and (pre-)historical reconstruction. The paper concludes with a consideration
of the prospects for future studies of the TAP languages."

"No one disputes that possession of language is one of the most distinctive of all human cultural attributes. The most
fundamental argument has to do with the nature of language as social practice. An attempt to divorce language from its
cultural context is to ignore the social circumstances which give it resonance and meaning. In the case of Sasak,
language use reinforces the existing status differential and social value of language associated with the group. This
perspective is employed, in this paper, to tackle the issue of Sasak language and culture."

This dissertation is a study in diachronic perspective on the impact of recording technologies, more specifically cassette and video compact disc (VCD), on Indonesian local cultures and societies. It examines how modern reproduced sound, which is constantly proliferating and multiplying up to today through various (social) media, but initially facilitated by recording media technology through the agency of regional recording industries, has influenced the contours of Indonesian local cultures. The study relates Indonesia?s first encounter with recording technology, examines the nature and cultural ramifications of the expansion of recording technology among Indonesia?s ethnic groups, and looks at its engagement with other media. As a case study, the West Sumatran recording industry is explored, along with the commercial cassettes and VCDs it has produced."
