"Cloud propagation over Sumatra and the surrounding area (10S-10N, 70-120E) during the Coupling Processes in
the Equatorial Atmosphere-I (CPEA-I) campaign (10 April to 9 May 2004) was tracked using brightness temperature
(Tb) data from the GOES-9 satellite. The cloud tracking was based on three-dimensional data with a threshold of Tb <
210 K. During the campaign, westward-moving clouds were more dominant than eastward-moving systems, with a ratio
of approximately 4:1. This characteristic coincided with the dominant easterly wind aloft. Most clouds propagated with
a speed varying between 4 and 35 m/s, with a mean value of 13.7 m/s. If the westward and eastward propagations were
separated, the average duration, speed, and span of the westward (eastward) moving clouds are 7.7 (5.8 h), -14.5 (9.8
m/s), and 435.5 (187.1 km), respectively. The characteristics of cloud propagation during the CPEA-I were influenced
by environmental factors such as relative humidity, temperature, the vertical movement of air, and wind shear. Such
factors interacted with the inactive and active phases of the Madden-Julian Oscillation.
Statistik Pergerakan Awan di Sumatera Selama CPEA-I. Karakteristik awan konvektif di Sumatera dan daerah
sekitarnya (10LS-10LU, 70-120BT) selama proyek Coupling Processes in the Equatorial Atmosphere-I (CPEA-I)

"The electromagnetic wave propagation in the mobile communication environments can be predicted by using ray tracing approach which incorporates reflection and diffraction. However, the ddiffuse scatering effects are often non-negligible in the experiment, since the roughness of the building surfaces is comparable with or larger than wavelength.
In this paper we present Method of Moments (MOM) analysis of the scattering from the 2D rough surface model of the building. The fluctuation of the field strength due to the change of the specular reflection point on the surface has been evaluated by statistical properties (the cumulative distribution and the autocorrelation). The effects of the incident angle and frequency are also studied."

The lidar remote sensing is one important application to observe the aerosol and cloud of the atmosphere. The micro pulse lidar (MPL) return signals are studied in the tropical area. In this investigation, the single scattering is analyzed the physical properties of aerosol and cloud, and multiple scattering is simulated by.Monte Carlo method. The signal simulation of single scattering predicts the maximum optical thickness by saturation. It was observed that the saturation of optical thickness from the lidar signal depends on the variation of extinction coefficient. This simulation is compared to the optical thickness estimation Hom the lidar data. The MPL data (at wavelength of 523 nm) was determined at night and daytime. And the slcy-radiometer (at wavelength 500 nm) is used as a reference data. The maximum lidar optical thickness was 2.6 at nighttime, and the daytime was 2.25 on October 31, 1997. Then, the maximum optical depth of sky-radiomcter data was 1.7 at the same time on October 31, 1997. Furthermore, the estimation of lidar ratio was determined at boundary layer and at cirrus cloud. The Si value of aerosol at boundary layer was observed in ranging of 31 to 40 sr at about 2 kin high. This research observed a new method to estimate the lidar ratio at cimrs cloud. It was estimated of S; parameter about 10 to 18 sr of citrus cloud. This result is also compared with iterative method, and the result shown the reasonable estimation. . The multiple scattering is simulated by Monte Carlo method. The eli`ect of multiple scattering is analyzed by multiple-scattering-to-single-scattering (MSS) ratio for various values of field-of-view (FOV) angles ofthe detection telescope. The simulation showed the first and second layers of cloud for FOV of larger then I mrad. However, the double-layers of cloud can?t be detected for FOV of less then 0.l mrad. Keywords: Single scattering, multiple scattering optical thickness, extinction coefficient, and lidar ratio."
