Douglas, Craig C.
"This compact yet thorough tutorial is the perfect introduction to the basic concepts of solving partial differential equations (PDEs) using parallel numerical methods. In just eight short chapters, the authors provide readers with enough basic knowledge of PDEs, discretization methods, solution techniques, parallel computers, parallel programming, and the run-time behavior of parallel algorithms to allow them to understand, develop, and implement parallel PDE solvers. Examples throughout the book are intentionally kept simple so that the parallelization strategies are not dominated by technical details.
A Tutorial on Elliptic PDE Solvers and Their Parallelization is a valuable aid for learning about the possible errors and bottlenecks in parallel computing. One of the highlights of the tutorial is that the course material can run on a laptop, not just on a parallel computer or cluster of PCs, thus allowing readers to experience their first successes in parallel computing in a relatively short amount of time.

"Toeplitz systems arise in a variety of applications in mathematics, scientific computing, and engineering, including numerical partial and ordinary differential equations, numerical solutions of convolution-type integral equations, stationary autoregressive time series in statistics, minimal realization problems in control theory, system identification problems in signal processing, and image restoration problems in image processing.
This practical book introduces current developments in using iterative methods for solving Toeplitz systems based on the preconditioned conjugate gradient method. The authors focus on the important aspects of iterative Toeplitz solvers and give special attention to the construction of efficient circulant preconditioners. Applications of iterative Toeplitz solvers to practical problems are addressed, enabling readers to use the book methods and algorithms to solve their own problems."

"Many engineering and scientific problems in design, control, and parameter estimation can be formulated as optimization problems that are governed by partial differential equations (PDEs). The complexities of the PDEs and the requirement for rapid solution significant difficulties. A particularly challenging class of PDE-constrained optimization problems is characterized by the need for real-time solution, i.e., in time scales that are sufficiently rapid to support simulation-based decision making.
Real-Time PDE-Constrained Optimization, the first book devoted to real-time optimization for systems governed by PDEs, focuses on new formulations, methods, and algorithms needed to facilitate real-time, PDE-constrained optimization. In addition to presenting state-of-the-art algorithms and formulations, the text illustrates these algorithms with a diverse set of applications that includes problems in the areas of aerodynamics, biology, fluid dynamics, medicine, chemical processes, homeland security, and structural dynamics.
Despite difficulties, there is a pressing need to capitalize on continuing advances in computing power to develop optimization methods that will replace simple rule-based decision making with optimized decisions based on complex PDE simulations."

"This second edition of the popular A Multigrid Tutorial preserves the introductory spirit of the first edition while roughly doubling the amount of material covered. The topics of the first edition have been enhanced with additional discussion, new numerical experiments, and improved figures. New topics in the second edition include nonlinear equations, Neumann boundary conditions, variable mesh and variable coefficient problems, anisotropic problems, algebraic multigrid (AMG), adaptive methods, and finite elements."

"A concise survey of the current state of knowledge in 1972 about solving elliptic boundary-value eigenvalue problems with the help of a computer. This volume provides a case study in scientific computing -- the art of utilizing physical intuition, mathematical theorems and algorithms, and modern computer technology to construct and explore realistic models of problems arising in the natural sciences and engineering."
