"After the Dutch East India Company captured the maritime areas of Ceylon from the Portugese in 1656, it issued Plakkaten on paper as manuscript copies to be posted at various place for administrative purposes. The Dutch clergymen got the religious documents copied on palm leaves following the traditional method. Soon they found this system unsatisfactory and attemps were made since 1720s by the superintendent of the arsenal in the Fort at Colombo to cast Sinhala type in the first instance. By 1736, a press with movable Sinhala type was established in the Fort. It was a join venture by the Dutch Reformed Church and the Duthc East India Company. It printed plakkaten, religious, educational and non-educational books in Sinhala, Tamil and Dutch. The press was active from 1737 to 1796 until it was taken over by the British with the capitulation of Colombo. The introduction of printing to Ceylon had a major impact on learning, writing and communication in the Island. It paved the way for further developments in these fields during the British period. "

"ABSTRAKSkripsi ini membahas mengenai representasi perpustakaan umum dan fungsiperpustakaan umum yang terdapat dalam novel Libri di Luca. Penelitian ini adalahpenelitian yang menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode penelitiansemiotik serta analisis sintagmatik dan paradigmatik Roland Barthes yangdikembangkan dari teori Ferdinand de Saussure. Analisis sintagmatik digunakanuntuk meneliti hubungan yang hadir secara bersamaan, sedangkan analisisparadigmatik digunakan untuk meneliti hubungan yang hadir dan tidak hadir dalamteks melainkan dalam pikiran pembaca teks. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwanovel Libri di Luca menggambarkan fungsi perpustakaan umum sebagai fungsirekreasi, informasi, dan fungsi perpustakaan umum yang digunakan sebagai tempatpertemuan.

ABSTRACTThis thesis discusses the representation of a public library and it?s function found inthe novel Libri di Luca. This research uses qualitative approach with semioticresearch method and Roland Barthes syntagmatic and paradigmatic analysis whichare developed from Ferdinand de Saussure?s Theory. The syntagmatic analysis isused to analyse the relation that was concurrently present, whereas the paradigmaticanalysis is used to analyse the relation that is not present in the text but in the mind ofthe readers. The result of this research indicates that the novel Libri di Luca describesthe public library?s function as a recreation, information, and as a meeting place.;;"
