"Human resources professionals are entrusted, perhaps more than any other corporate designates, with the well-being of their organization?s population. They bridge the gaps between the individual and the collective, the person and the purpose. The most successful and effective HR professionals see their careers as a calling, and their work, though driven by corporate goals, is graced by a sense of purpose, a profound generosity, and a love for what they do and the constituencies they serve."

"This book is the latest of Dave Ulrichʹs treatises on gaining sustainable competitive advantage through the transformation of human resource management. Over the years, Ulrichʹs books on HR transformation would fill an average bookshelf -- 15 in all. As a result of the many books on the subject, the latest book, HR Transformation, could easily be regarded as one of the many -- a repetition of the story of how an organization can be improved through professional HR. Yet, this is not the case; this latest book is clearly built on two of the best previous books, Human Resource Champions (1997) and The HR Value Proposition (2005), and now deserves to be on the top of the stack. By most any standard it is a "must read." Most of Ulrichʹs books have been written with co-authors and published by Harvard Business School Press. This latest, published by McGraw Hill, is with Wayne Brockbank, also co-author of The HR Value Proposition, along with first-time book co-authors, Justin Allen, Jon Younger, and Mark Nyman. Dave Ulrich is a professor at the University of Michiganʹs Ross School of Business. All of the authors have a great deal of experience as teachers of managers and professionals, along with expertise as human resource consultants for organizations. The goal of the present book is to share these experiences with a broad professional audience. -- Description from http://business.troy.edu/jhre/Articles/PDF/3-3/32.pdf (Oct. 25, 2011)."

"Drawn from the author's more than 25 years of experience and insights as an HR practitioner at Hallmark and other companies, the book outlines a 10-step, results-oriented plan for making the transition. It helps you integrate top-quality tactical work with innovative internal systems -- talent systems, training systems, reward systems, or work processes -- that will meet the strategic business demands of your organization. Easy-to-read, thought-provoking, and packed with real-world examples of what worked and what didn't at Hallmark, Roadmap to Strategic HR helps you: boil down the reams of research and concepts into a comprehensible plan you can successfully implement. Understand the business realities that are driving change, including employees afraid for their jobs, and demanding and scarce customers. Compress the multitude of HR activities into five fundamental processes: workforce planning and staffing, learning and development, organization development, performance management, and employee relations. Examine each of the five processes through a powerful strategic lens. Resolve the tensions between HR specialists and HR generalists. Build a real partnership between the frontline managers and HR staff. Identify the competencies required of HR professionals who assume the crucial role of "organizational architect." Recognize the roadblocks and political landmines that might lurk along the way. The connection between people issues and business success is irrefutable. "
