"The late 19th to early 20th century was a period of great transformation in Korean
literature. However, change was also accompanied by continuity, with works that
inherited or utilized the styles of pre-modern periods existing alongside works of
a new stylistic form. This was the situation for &ldquoself-narrative&rdquo works which looked
back upon, recorded and evaluated the meaning of a person&rsquos life. Prior to the
modern period, works that took the writer&rsquos own life as the subject matter were rare
in traditional East Asian literature as the European tradition of writing confessions
was absent. As a result, the autobiography, in the European sense, did not exist.
Nevertheless, self-narrative works which took on the forms of other pre-existing
literary genres can be observed. Examples of self-narrative works which utilized
traditional literary forms can also be found in the Korean literature of the late 19th to
early 20th century. These works differ from European autobiographies in terms their
objectivity and style their characteristic features are the way in which the historical
circumstances of the time, which are not harmonious, are reflected and how the
transformation of the social group, rather than the individual, is emphasized. On the
other hand, self-narrative works which adopted new literary styles from Europe or
Japan also began to appear, produced by individuals who had become familiar with
the Christian tradition or who had studied abroad. Examples of this can be found
in the works of An Jungg?n, Jang ?ngjin and Yi Kwangsu which demonstrate the
adoption of new techniques that allow confessions or the disclosure of the writer&rsquos
inner side. These new forms of self-narrative cannot be regarded, in terms of their
content and theme, as representing a development but their unique significance
cannot be denied as well."

"This book analyses the interface between medicine and colonial society through the lens of gender. Based on hitherto unused primary sources the work traces how since almost the beginning of the nineteenth century the growth of hospital medicine in Bengal created a space, albeit small, for providing Western health care to female patients. It observes that, unlike in the colonial setup, before the advent of hospital medicine women were treated mostly by female practitioners of indigenous therapies who had commendable skill as practitioners. The book also explores the linkages of growth of medical education for women and the role of the Indian reformers as well as British administrators in this process. The manuscript tackles several crucial questions including those of racial discrimination, reproductive health practices, sexual health, famines and mortality, and the role of womens agencies and other organizations in popularizing Western medicine and health care. Thus this work, explores the different processes which contributed towards the shaping of the discursive domain of medicine with a bearing on womens health as well as highlights different dimensions of empirical developments. In the process it enriches our understanding of colonialism, gender, and politics of medicine in the nineteenth and twentieth century in a novel way."

Bell, Michael
"The use of myth in Modernist literature is a misleadingly familiar theme. Joyce's appropriation of Homer's Odyssey and Eliot's of Frazer's Golden Bough are, like Lawrence's primitivism or Yeats's nationalist folklore, attempts to discover an underlying metaphysic in an increasingly fragmented world. In Literature, Modernism and Myth Michael Bell also examines the relationship of myth and modernism to postmodernism. Myth, Bell shows, is inherently flexible; it was used to justify Pound's totalizing vision of society which eventually descended into fascism, and the liberal, ironic vision of human existence Joyce and Mann expressed. Those theorists who present myth as another form of mystification, a search for false origins, ignore its use by modernists to emphasise the ultimate contingency of all values. This anti-foundational element, Bell claims, enables myth to act as a corrective to the claims of ideological critique. Bell shows how postmodern concerns with political and social responsibility, and the role literature plays in formulating this, have in fact been inherited from modernism."
