Film ini menceritakan tentang sekelompok Viking yang menempati sebuah pulau yang bernama Berk. Setiap orang yang menghuni di pulau tersebut laki-laki maupun perempuan memiliki peran pada setiap aspek kehidupan termasuk perang, di mana biasanya diidentikan sebagai area pekerjaan laki-laki karena perang memerlukan kekerasan. Perang merupakan identik dengan peng- genderan (peran gender, feminitas, dan seksualitas) dan juga fisikalitas (latihan fisik dan kemampuan fisik). Sebagai film tentang laki-laki dan perempuan yang berpartispasi dalam perang, How to Train Your Dragon 1 menunjukan adanya kesamaan hak antara perempuan dan laki-laki sebagai pejuang atau petarung. Makalah ini mengaitkan tema perempuan sebagai petarung atau pejuang dengan penggambaran feminitas dan seksualitas gender lain dan juga kekuatan fisik di zona perang. Makalah ini menyimpulkan bahwa meskipun dalam film ini menunjukan adanya kesamaan hak antara laki-laki dan perempuan dalam perang namun film ini masih menunjukkan bahwa peran laki-laki masih mendominasi dibandingkan dengan perempuan sehingga menunjukkan perempuan masih di anggap sebagai kaum subordinasi.

This academic paper scrutinizes gender issues depicted in the film How to Train Your Dragon 1 which was directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders. The story is about a group of Vikings who lives on an island called Berk. Men and women take part in every aspect of life on the island including war which is generally considered a male domain because of the entailed violence. It deals with gender (gender roles, femininity, and sexuality) and also physicality (physical training and physical capabilities). As a film about men and women who participate in war, How to Train Your Dragon 1 depicts gender equity of women characters as combatants. This paper relates the theme of women as combatants with other gendered depiction of femininity, sexuality and the idea of physical strength in war zone. This paper concludes that even though there seems to be gender equality in war and military, the film still shows men's domination and women?s subordination."

"ABSTRAKPerkembangan media digital memberikan peluang bagi produsen media untuk menceritakan narasi secara luas. Teknik penceritaan yang saat ini diterapkan adalah transmedia storytelling yang diperkenalkan oleh Henry Jenkins. Transmedia storytelling adalah teknik penceritaan yang menggunakan berbagai medium yang berbeda dengan narasi utama yang sama. Transmedia storytelling memiliki tujuh prinsip dan salah satunya membahas tentang kesempatan untuk memperlihatkan tokoh karakter yang lebih beragam. Hal ini berbeda dengan serial How To Train Your Dragon (HTTYD) yang memiliki karakter terbatas. Penelitian ini menganalisa bagaimana HTTYD menggunakan transmedia storytelling pada tokoh karakter terbatas. Serial HTTYD menggunakan seluruh prinsip transmedia storytelling namun memiliki narasi tokoh karakter yang terbatas di seluruh medianya, tokoh Hiccup menjadi fokus dalam keseluruhan narasi dalam serial ini. Hal ini menjadi sebuah kekurangan karena mempengaruhi motivasi audiens untuk menonton dan menikmati serial HTTYD. Namun hal ini tidak mempengaruhi penggemar yang tetap berperan secara aktif untuk memahami dunia HTTYD

ABSTRACTThe development of digital media gives media producers a chance to tell a broad narrative. The storytelling technique that is currently being applied is transmedia storytelling, which introduced by Henry Jenkins. Transmedia storytelling is a storytelling technique which uses different medium with a single storyworld. Transmedia storytelling has seven principles and one of them discusses the opportunities to show diverse characters. This is different from the How To Train Your Dragon (HTTYD) series which has limited character. This paper analyse how HTTYD series uses transmedia storytelling by having limited characters. The HTTYD series uses all the principles of transmedia storytelling but has limited character narratives throughout the medium, the main character, Hiccup are the focus of the entire narration in this series. This becomes a disadvantage because it affects the audience motivation to watch and enjoy the HTTYD series. But this does not affect the fans who continue to play an active role in understanding the world of HTTYD."
