Motor arus searah penguat terpisah dapat dioperasikan di empat kuadran, berdasarkan moda kerja motor dan moda kerja pengereman regeneratif di dua arah putaran. Pengendalian tegangan catu motor di empat kuadran menggunakan penyearah jembatan tiristor tiga fasa anti parallel, yang tegangan keluarnya divariasikan dengan pengendalian sudut penyalaan tiristor.
Untuk memperbaiki unjuk kerja kecepatan motor digunakan umpan balik kecepatan dan untuk membatasi arus jangkar, baik saat pengasutan maupun saat peralihan akibat pembebanan, digunakan umpan balik arus jangkar. Kedua sinyal umpan balik akan dibandingkan dengan sinyal acuannya Sinyal kesalahan yang merupakan selisih sinyal acuan dan sinyal umpan balik dikendalikan agar diperaleh tanggapan sistem yang diinginkan.
Pada skripsi ini, pengendali kecepatan dan arus jangkar berupa pengendati PI (Proporsionat - Integral), yang digunakan untuk memperbaiki kesatahan keadaan tunak dan untuk memperoleh tanggapan sistem yang cepat dan stabil. Pemodl/an dan simulasi sistem kendali empat kuadran motor arus searah penguat terpisah ini menggunakan fasilitas Simulink pada program Matlab 5.3,
