"Biotechnology is an expansive field incorporating expertise in both the life science and engineering disciplines. In biotechnology, the scientist is concerned with developing the most favourable biocatalysts, while the engineer is directed towards process performance, defining conditions and strategies that will maximize the production potential of the biocatalyst. Increasingly, the synergistic effect of the contributions of engineering and life sciences is recognised as key to the translation of new bioproducts from the laboratory bench to commercial bioprocess. Fundamental to the successful realization of the bioprocess is a need for process engineers and life scientists competent in evaluating biological systems from a cross-disciplinary viewpoint. Bioprocess engineering aims to generate core competencies through an understanding of the complementary biotechnology disciplines and their interdependence, and an appreciation of the challenges associated with the application of engineering principles in a life science context. Initial chapters focus on the microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology that underpin biocatalyst potential for product accumulation. The following chapters develop kinetic and mass transfer principles that quantify optimum process performance and scale up. The text is wide in scope, relating to bioprocesses using bacterial, fungal and enzymic biocatalysts, batch, fed-batch and continuous strategies and free and immobilised configurations.

The advantages and potentials of Chlorella vulgaris is contaminant resistant, high biomass productivity, maximum tolerance of CO2 are 40% and can grow in contaminated waters. Chlorella vulgaris also have a high lipid productivity thus potentially to be used as a source of biodiesel. Cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris in this study using tofu wastewaste in a 18-liter photobioreactor, 5000 lx illumination, air aeration 5 liters / min and the pressure of 1 atm and a temperature of 28˚C. In the medium variation wastes 20% and 30% of Chlorella vulgaris growth rate charts are relatively similar with Walne medium. But can not survive on the waste medium 37.5% and 50%. Lipid productivity obtained in the same relative variation of waste medium 20% and 30% and Walne, is equal 23.0%, 23.3% and 22.3%. After the cultivation of Chlorella vugaris, BOD, COD, phosphates, and ammonia ions in the tofu wastewater to be under the threshold value of the waste that has been set by the Government."

"Biopolymers : applications and trends provides an up-to-date summary of the varying market applications of biopolymers characterized by biodegradability and sustainability. It includes tables with the commercial names and properties of each biopolymer family, along with biopolymers for each marketing segment, not only presenting all the major market players, but also highlighting trends and new developments in products.
The book includes a thorough breakdown of the vast range of application areas, including medical and pharmaceutical, packaging, construction, automotive, and many more, giving engineers critical materials information in an area which has traditionally been more limited than conventional polymers.
In addition, the book uses recent patent information to convey the latest applications and techniques in the area, thus further illustrating the rapid pace of development and need for intellectual property for companies working on new and innovative products.
