"This thesis presents an experimental and theoretical study of the coherent properties of trapped atomic ensembles at high densities, which are essential to many of the aforementioned applications. The study focuses on how inter-particle interactions modify the ensemble coherence dynamics, and whether it is possible to extend the coherence time by means of external control. The thesis presents a theoretical model which explains the effect of elastic collision of the coherence dynamics and then reports on experiments which test this model successfully in the lab. Furthermore, the work includes the first implementation of dynamical decoupling with ultra-cold atomic ensembles. It is demonstrated experimentally that by using dynamical decoupling the coherence time can be extended 20-fold. This has a great potential to increase the usefulness of these ensembles for quantum computation."

"This text is an introduction to the physics of collisional plasmas, as opposed to plasmas in space. It is intended for graduate students in physics and engineering . The first chapter introduces with progressively increasing detail, the fundamental concepts of plasma physic. The motion of individual charged particles in various configurations of electric and magnetic fields is detailed in the second chapter while the third chapter considers the collective motion of the plasma particles described according to a hydrodynamic model. The fourth chapter is most original in that it introduces a general approach to energy balance, valid for all types of discharges comprising direct current(DC) and high frequency (HF) discharges, including an applied static magnetic field. The basic concepts required in this fourth chapter have been progressively introduced in the previous chapters. The text is enriched with approx. 100 figures, and alphabetical index and 45 fully resolved problems. Mathematical and physical appendices provide complementary information or allow to go deeper in a given subject.

"Isolated atoms in group II-B such as zinc (Zn),
cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) are chemically
stable. These atoms are important in the formation of excimer. Zinc in particular has been
investigated by many researchers, as Zn2
excimer holds promise because of its long lifetime and
its potential as an energy-storage system. However, excimer?s benefits are based on excitation
of the outermost electron. Our study confirmed the quantum
dynamical condensation processes
in which inner-core excitation arises due to ion-recombination between the vapor phase and the
solid phase. The X-ray diffraction of the condensed
structure of zinc film had included strong
diffuse scattering depending on the
incident energies. In this research, we produced the excited
state of zinc excimer characterized by an extremely long lifetime.
Intriguingly, a feature of the
zinc film is that it transforms
from metallic to insulative. It is thought that
such a structure with
this characteristic has been affected by electron spin and atomic distortion by inner-core
excitation. The structure obtained in our experiment is expected to prove promising in
engineering applications, such as electronics, spintroni
cs, and batteries."

"This well-known introductory textbook gives a uniform presentation of nuclear and particle physics from an experimental point of view.
The first part, Analysis, is devoted to disentangling the substructure of matter. This part shows that experiments designed to uncover the substructures of nuclei and nucleons have a similar conceptual basis, and lead to the present picture of all matter being constructed from a small number of elementary building blocks and a small number of fundamental interactions.
The second part, Synthesis, shows how the elementary particles may be combined to build hadrons and nuclei. The fundamental interactions, which are responsible for the forces in all systems, become less and less evident in increasingly complex systems. Such systems are in fact dominated by many-body phenomena. A section on neutrino oscillations and one on nuclear matter at high temperatures bridge the field of nuclear and particle physics and modem astrophysics and cosmology.
The seventh revised and extended edition includes new material, in particular the experimental verification of the Higgs particle at the LHC, recent results in neutrino physics, the violation of CP-symmetry in the decay of neutral B-mesons, the experimental investigations of the nucleon's spin structure and outstanding results of the HERA experiments in deep-inelastic electron- and positron-proton scattering. The concise text is based on lectures held at the University of Heidelberg and includes numerous exercises with worked answers. It has been translated into several languages and has become a standard reference for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses."
