"The book presents a comprehensive exposition of extension results for maps between different geometric objects and of extension-trace results for smooth functions on subsets with no a priori differential structure (Whitney problems). The account covers development of the area from the initial classical works of the first half of the 20th century to the flourishing period of the last decade. Seemingly very specific these problems have been from the very beginning a powerful source of ideas, concepts and methods that essentially influenced and in some cases even transformed considerable areas of analysis. "The purpose of this book is to present some basic results in analysis that canbe used to solve various problems, so it may serve as a kind of toolbox. We donot intend to give a complete panorama of the field. In particular, we concentrateon real analysis and leave complex analysis aside; however we consider complexfunctions now and then. "This book presents recently developed statistical methods and theory required for the application of the tools of functional data analysis to problems arising in geosciences, finance, economics and biology. It is concerned with inference based on second order statistics, especially those related to the functional principal component analysis.
