"Pemerintah Hindia-Belanda pada masa kolonial, tahun 1900-1942, atas tuntutan para tokoh perempuan pribumi (Raden Ajeng Kartini dan Raden Dewi Sartika), dalam usaha mengangkat derajat dan harkat kaum perempuan serta melepaskan dari ikatan adat dan kebiasaan yang merugikan, diminta agar membuka sekolah khusus bagi kaum perempuan. J.H. Abendanon dengan alasan lain, seperti kecilnya jumlah anak perempuan pribumi yang bersekolah, dan hambatan adat yang melarang anak perempuan bersekolah bersama (ko-edukasi) dengan anak laki-laki pada usia dewasa, meminta agar pemerintah membuka sekolah khusus bagi kaum perempuan pribumi, agar mereka tidak "terbelakang". Tetapi pemerintah belum dapat mengabulkan tuntutan dan permintaan tersebut karena waktunya belum tepat. Dewi Sartika atas prakarsa dan swadaya, pada tahun 1904 mendirikan "sekolah isteri" sekolah pertama untuk kaum perempuan pribumi. Usaha ini diikuti oleh masyarakat lainnya sehingga penyelenggaraan sekolah perempuan meningkat jumlahnya. Tetapi walaupun telah ada usaha masyarakat tersebut, masalah keterbelakangan dan kemiskinan kaum perempuan pribumi belum teratasi. Masyarakat mengharapkan Pemerintah mengulurkan tangan melalui pendidikan, memberi bekal pada kaum perempuan untuk bisa mandiri. Langkah pertama yang dilakukan Pemerintah adalah memberikan subsidi pada sekolah-sekolah perempuan yang ada, kemudian menata program pada sekolah dasar umum, selanjutnya membuka kesempatan bagi kaum perempuan untuk menjadi guru, dengan membuka sekolah guru perempuan, dan akhirnya membuka sekolah dasar khusus bagi perempuan pribumi yang sekaligus digunakan untuk latihan oleh murid sekolah guru. Hasil kebijaksanaan tersebut, cukup memuaskan, karena selain meningkatnya jumlah murid perempuan pada sekolah umum, juga jumlah sekolah perempuan meningkat lagi. Dari segi prestasi siswa perempuan yang lulus dari sekolah tidak mengecewakan sehingga diterima di masyarakat untuk menduduki jabatan tertentu, seperti guru, perawat, pemegang buku dan lainnya, sehingga kebijaksanaan tersebut juga mengakibatkan mobilitas dan perubahan sosial, ekonomi serta kebudayaan. "The objective of this research is to describe (1) the concept of nation's character education; 2) resources and scope of nation's character education; 3) efforts for nation's character building at school; and 4) method of nation's character building at school and family. The method of this study used library research. Based on the result of the study, it may be concluded that: 1) nation's character education is a system to build character values at school community involving components of knowledge, awereness or willingness, and action to perform those values, either to the Almaighty God, self, other human beigs, environment, or country so that the students will be a holistic human beings. 2) resources for nation's character education include values contained in Pancasila and norms of Indonesian Constitution from 1945; While scope of nation's character education involves: objectives that describe the equality of intended character, the most effective material to acheve the objectives, effective instructional goals; 3) Nation's character education at the school can be performed through the habituation of good attitude and behaviour from early childhood and to be continued persistenty and sustainably pursuant to the level of development of learners and their environment condition. Nation character education should be performed continously and involve student's parents and community; and 4) the method to build nation's character use behavior control. Lower grade students need more time to behavior control than higher grade students. "
