Becker, Jan
"This book covers the fundamental developments of plasmonic nanosenor design over the last few years. Jan Becker addresses the relevant theoretical concepts and then applies these to discuss the properties and trends in nanoparticles of various shapes and sizes. The first discovery Jan makes in his PhD research is that there is an optimal shape for plasmonic nanoparticles used for sensing purposes. In further chapters he goes on to describe novel experimental methods to use plasmonic nanoparticles for molecular sensing. Many of the experiments described in this thesis.

ABSTRACTRecent experimental study on strontium niobate oxide system has revealed unconventional plasmons generation due to confinement by oxygen planes. A phenomenological model accompanied the experimental data on that study has suggested that the confined electrons behave as harmonic oscillators. These motivate us to further study the effect of space confinement to the electrons on the generation of the unconventional plasmons in a finite-size system. The dynamics of the correlated electrons in this confined system is described using the finite-size 3D Hubbard model that is solved within mean-field approximation. We study a hypothetical cubic systems that consist of n × n × n single-orbital atoms with n being 3, 5, 7, and 9. The calculation is done with and without incorporating the on-site Coulomb repulsion. We also consider extended system as a comparison to know the effect of confinement. Our calculations show that unconventional plasmons are observed only if we take into account both the confinement effect and the on-site Coulomb repulsion."

"Aimed to be a snapshot of progress in the development of a variety of sensors, used in different application fields, this postgraduate-level book combines the work of leading academic authors. The authors of each chapter describe the principles of operation, characteristics and applications of the sensor-type under consideration, but in addition feature recent advances and prospects for future development. These are areas where advances are ongoing so that there is considerable scope for future development activity. Such sensors are applied in many and varied fields of science, measurement and technology."
