Doty, Jeffrey S.
""In late Elizabethan England, political appeals to the people were considered dangerously democratic, even seditious: the commons were supposed to have neither political voice nor will. Yet such appeals happened so often that the regime coined the word 'popularity' to condemn the pursuit of popular favour. Jeffrey S. Doty argues that in plays from Richard II to Coriolanus, Shakespeare made the tactics of popularity - and the wider public they addressed - vital aspects of politics. Shakespeare figured the public not as an extension of the royal court, but rather as a separate entity that, like the Globe's spectators who surrounded the fictional princes on its thrust stage, subjected their rulers to relentless scrutiny. For ordinary playgoers, Shakespeare's plays offered good practice for understanding the means and ends of popularity - and they continue to provide insight to the public relations strategies that have come to define modern political culture"--"

"Since the mid-1990s, several Japanese cities have responded to the gradual increase in their non-Japanese populations by setting up ‘foreigners' assemblies’—venues in which representative foreigners, generally appointed by local officials and civilian representatives, can come together to discuss the social, economic, and cultural challenges of life in Japan. These bodies have no administrative power, but serve as advisory panels to local governments. This paper uses ethnographic studies of two such bodies—those of Kanagawa prefecture and Kawasaki city—to ascertain their role in contemporary Japanese society. I find that they have powerful relevance to three hotly debated issues: internationalization, local empowerment, and the development of civil society in Japan."

Goodman, Lenn E.
"How can we, as people and communities with different religions and cultures, live together with integrity? Does tolerance require us to deny our deep differences or give up all claims to truth, to trade our received traditions for skepticism or relativism? Cultural philosopher Lenn E. Goodman argues that we can respect one another and learn from one another's ways without either sharing them or relinquishing our own. He argues that our commitments to our own ideals and norms need not mean dogmatism or intolerance. In this study, Goodman offers a trenchant critique of John Rawls's pervasive claim that religious and metaphysical voices must be silenced in the core political deliberations of a democracy. Inquiry, dialogue, and open debate remain the safeguards of public and personal sanity, and any of us, Goodman illustrates, can learn from one another's traditions and explorations without abandoning our own"

ABSTRACT
What was brought to the cinemas through filmmaking often inspired from conflicts occurred within society Cultural elements then punctuated through the film rsquo s narration However putting such punctuation often changed into a sensitive issue that collides with SARA discrimination The film Cinta Tapi Beda tells us about a love story between the main characters which had difference in both cultural and religious background Polemics then arouse among the people of Minangkabau who are against the depiction of Diana as Catholic Padangnese woman because it is considered offending the value of their cultural ethnicity SARA discrimination issue then rises regarding the Minangkabau rsquo s cultural identity Padangese language spoken by Diana in her interaction could be one of the factors that mislead the interpretation of her true identity as pilgrim from Manado That rsquo s why I think that it needs a holistic understanding from the audience in order to avoid the polemic and perception bias occurred in the film Moreover people behind the scene need to conduct an in depth research so that they can lift the cultural elements correctly and has the right justification to elevate those things mentioned.

This paper explains about public sphere as the place for debatting and giving the idea for everyone. But, in today’s context, public sphere is not only a sphere in physical way, but also virtual way. In social media, it is no longer effective for face to face communication, including distance as is found in public sphere. As public sphere media, social media like Facebook, Twitter, Path and Kompasiana have free access and become a place where any expressions, ideas and opinions meet.
In this paper, discussion is made regarding five cases related to the use of public sphere in social media including Florence case in Path, Jokowi humiliation on Facebook, Ahok humilation on Twitter, Prita and Omni Hospital case and also Jilbab Hitam case. The cases reveal that inspite of the principle of freedom of expression in public sphere, social media users are not meant to convey any opinion that may harm an individual, group or institution. Opinion delivered does not contain any provocations, either “trolling” or “flaming” so that the user will not be legally or lawfully caught. Cases of the use of public sphere may bring about a social movoment by public sphere users. The nature of this social movement may either support or bring down the subject.

ABSTRACT
This journal discusses about the presidential elections in Indonesia in 2014 that presents a new phenomenon in the process of democratization in Indonesia. This phenomenon is one of the social media. This happens because Indonesia has become one of the countries with the highest number of social media users in the world. Growing public opinion on social media influenced by the opening of opportunities to access the Internet that makes the internet (social media) into the medium to convey the message of the democratic party in Indonesia. Social media turns into a contemporary public space filled by people who expression their voice opinions. However, when freedom of expression in support of candidates for president and vice president are influenced by a successful team and partisan, the role of criticism in the public sphere becomes ever lost and public space functions as a control tool for the government becomes faded."
