"Sustainable economic development : resources, environment, and institutions presents 25 articles that lay the foundations of sustainable development in a way that facilitates effective policy design. The editors mix broad thematic papers with focused micro-papers, balancing theories with policy designs.
The book begins with two sections on sustainable development principles and practice and on specific settings where sustainable development is practiced. Two more sections illuminate institutions, governance, and political economy. Additional sections cover sustainable development and agriculture, and risk and economic security, including disaster management. This rich source of information should appeal to any institution involved in development work, and to development practitioners grappling with an array of difficult on-the-ground developmental challenges."

The conventional view of development which is only oriented to economic growth is no longer in line with the decreasing availability of non-renewable resources that requires sustainable development. Indonesia applies the concept of sustainable development, one form of manifestation is in the village. This research aims to extend understanding the behavior of the local community towards hygiene to support environmental sustainability and the sustainability of the household economics, including the identification of various factors related to sustainable development and make suggestions for village communities and the government to achieve sustainable development in the village. Modeling using system business dynamics used Pezzey's basic model of sustainable environmental economic, then it was developed in accordance with the results of mix methods that combine in-depth interviews with historical village data and literature studies. The model is then simulated and the results show that pollution will continue to increase every year, but over time people will adapt especially to air and water pollution. However, diseases from soil pollution caused by eating bananas take a long time so that the villagers do not care and continue to eat poor quality bananas. Reduction of family waste and greening are needed to reduce the amount of pollution."

"This paper assesses the effectiveness of financial depth and financial inclusion in the mitigation of output volatility during the 2008-2010 Global Financial Crisis. The paper also evaluates whether finance is more effective in countries with more developed financial systems, higher levels of economic developments, sounder banking systems, and better political stability. Employing a cross-sectional dataset covering more than 100 countries, our results indicate the ability of finance in subduing output volatility during the crisis. Our evidence is also concrete in suggesting the success of finance in reducing output volatility in more financially developed, advanced, and politically stable countries. However, the evidence is unclear on whether finance is beneficial for countries characterized by low, intermediate, or high banking stability. In addition to these findings, the preponderance of evidence tends to suggest the better ability of financial usage as compared to financial access in mitigating aggregate fluctuations during the crisis. Finally, our additional analysis reveals that finance functions well in stabilizing output when output volatility is high."

Financial crisis that occurred in the United States in 2007 triggered the global economic crisis in 2008 which result in the weakening Indonesia international trade performance. Lethargic Indonesian exports and imports during the global economic crisis has implications for the sector who producing goods and sector that a lot depends on external demand (tradable sector). This study aims to identify the turnover and the situation of tradable sector workers which affected most by the global economic crisis. Data of 2008-2009 Sakernas panel showed that the tradable sector workers adjust to the global economic crisis through turnover and changing working hours. Tradable sector workers who experiencing turnover were workers who live in urban areas, educated junior / senior high school or diploma/university, and the marriage status is not / ever married. Real wage have increased eventhough the renumeration were still below the provincial minimum wage and the average working hours decreased slightly. The informal sector and food agriculture, plantation, hunting, forestry, and fishery absorbed more workers during the global economic crisis."
