"Throughout history, humanity has been plagued by a myriad of humanitarian crises that seemingly take the form of perpetual human suffering. Today, approximately 125,000,000 people require humanitarian assistance as the result of famine, war, geopolitical conflict, and natural disasters. A core component of this suffering is afflictions related to human health, where disturbances strain or overwhelm the existing healthcare infrastructure to create the conditions for an increase in morbidities and co-morbidities. One of the more startling elements is the loss of life to preventable medical conditions that were not properly treated or even diagnosed in the field, and is often due to the limited interventional capacity that medical teams and humanitarian practitioners have in these scenarios. These individuals are often hindered by medical equipment deficiencies or devices not meant to function in austere conditions. The development of highly versatile, feasible, and cost-effective medical devices and technologies that can be deployed in the field is essential to enhancing medical care in unconventional settings. In this book we examine the nature of the creative problem-solving paradigm, and dissect the intersection of frugal, disruptive, open, and reverse innovation processes in advancing humanitarian medicine. Specifically, we examine the feasible deployment of these devices and technologies in unconventional environments not only by humanitarian aid and disaster relief agencies, but also by crisis-affected communities themselves. "Despite its much-touted agenda to fight poverty and corruption, the Aquino administration was not able to produce good results during its term at the national level. However, some political forces and policy reforms that emerged with the administration achieved remarkable change at the local level. This paper explores the case of Siquijor Province, where an entrenched political dynasty was defeated in the 2013 and 2016 elections by candidates supported by the Liberal Party and its allied forces, Akbayan, and analyzes factors that brought this change by focusing on activities of People Power Volunteers for Reform, the impact of bottom-up budgeting projects, and the mobilization of powers of the national government through personal relationships. It also notes achievements of the Aquino administration at the local level, provides a critical perspective to the elite democracy discourse that sticks to a static view of Philippine politics, and clarifies local practices by progressive forces that confront oligarchy."

Meskipun demikian, aksi unjuk rasa besar-besaran ini tidak diliput secara objektif oleh mayoritas media cetak. Salah satu akibat dari hal tersebut adalah pemboikotan beberaoa penggerak masyarakat dari ruang public seperti perpustakaan. Selain membutuhkan ruang untuk menyuarakan berbagai tuntutan, masyarakat juga perlu fasilitas yang mendukung perencanaan pergerakan. Karya akhir ini bertujuan untuk merancang sebuah pusat komunitas dengan tipologi baru yang memadukan media dan arsitektur untuk membantu masyarakat dalam menuntut dan menggunakan hak-hak mereka. Tulisan ini juga ingin mengontekstualisasikan media dan arsitektur kembali, sebagai sarana pemberdayaan, bukan penindasan.

ABSTRACT

Recent significant political and ecological events in Australia have caused an influx of citizen protests in Brisbane. However, these massive protest turnouts have not been portrayed in the most objective way by local mainstream media outlets. The vilification of protests and their organizers had quite a large impact, as it caused several community organizers to be banned from public spaces, such as libraries. Aside from needing a platform to voice their demands, citizens are also in dire need of spaces to facilitate them in organizing their movements. This projects goals were to imagine a new typology of civic buildings that integrate media and physical spaces to assist citizens in speaking their truth to pursue their rights and eventually exercise them. It seeks to recontextualize media and architecture as tools for empowerment instead of oppression."
