"Road safety barriers are used to redirect traffic at roadside work-zones. When filled with water, these barriers are able to withstand low to moderate impact speeds up to 50kmh-1. Despite this feature, there are challenges when using portable water-filled barriers (PWFBs) such as large lateral displacements as well as tearing and breakage during impact, especially at higher speeds. In this study, the authors explore the use of composite action to enhance the crashworthiness of PWFBs and enable their use at higher speeds. Initially, we investigated the energy absorption capability of water in PWFB. Then, we considered the composite action of a PWFB with the introduction of a steel frame to evaluate its impact on performance. Findings of the study show that the initial height of impact must be lower than the free surface level of water in a PWFB for the water to provide significant crash energy absorption. In general, impact of a road barrier that is 80% filled is a good estimation. Furthermore, the addition of a composite structure greatly reduces the probability of tearing by decreasing the strain and impact energy transferred to the shell container. This allows the water to remain longer in the barrier to absorb energy via inertial displacement and sloshing response. Information from this research will aid in the design of next generation roadside safety structures aimed to increase safety on modern roadways."

"Komposit sandwich adalah material yang banyak diaplikasikan dalam berbagai industri, struktur bangunan, dan moda transportasi. Komposit sandwich memiliki kekuatan yang tinggi, massa yang ringan, dan dapat dibentuk dengan mudah. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah membandingkan sifat mekanik (sifat tarik, sifat lengkung, dan sifat tekan) komposit sandwich dengan inti busa PU dan kulit epoksi diperkuat woven roving fiberglass, yang difabrikasi dengan teknik cold press-adhesif (ADS) dan VARI (vacuum assisted resin infusion). Pengukuran densitas, pengujian tarik, lentur dan tekan dilakukan dalam penelitian ini. Pengamatan permukaan sampel dilakukan untuk mengetahui kerusakan yang terjadi pada sampel setelah pengujian mekanik. Densitas komposit sandwich memiliki nilai yang relatif sama, yaitu sebesar (0,25 ± 0,01) g/cm3 untuk komposit VARI dan sebesar (0,27 ± 0,01) g/cm3 untuk komposit ADS. Kuat tarik sampel ADS, (1,96 ± 0,28) MPa, memiliki nilai yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan kuat tarik sampel VR; sedangkan kuat lengkung sampel VR, (11,70 ± 1,98) MPa, memiliki nilai yang lebih tinggi. Kuat tekan kedua sampel memiliki nilai yang relatif sama yaitu (1,36 ± 0,45) MPa untuk sampel VR dan (1,32 ± 0,02) MPa untuk sampel ADS. Kerusakan yang terjadi pada komposit sandwich berupa kerusakan pada inti busa PU, dan delaminasi pada kulit dari komposit sandwich.

Sandwich composites are widely applicated materials in various industries, building structure, and transportation. Sandwich composites have high strength value, lightweight, and can be fabricated easily. The purpose of this research was to compare the mechanical properties (tensile, flexural, and compressive strengths) of sandwich composite with polyurethane foam as a core and woven roving fiberglass reinforced epoxy as skins, which were fabricated using cold press-adhesive (ADS) and VARI (vacuum assisted resin infusion). Density measurement, tensile, flexural, and compressive tests were carried out in this research. Sample surface observation was carried out to determine the damage that occurred to the samples after mechanical tests. The densities of both composites had relatively the same values, (0,25 ± 0,01) g/cm3 for VR sandwich composite and (0,27 ± 0,01) g/cm3 for ADS sandwich composite. The tensile strength of ADS sandwich composite, (1,96 ± 0,28) MPa, had a higher value than that the VR sandwich composite sample, while the flexural strength of VR sandwich composite, (11,70 ± 1,98) MPa, had a higher value than that the ADS sandwich composite. Compressive strength of both sandwich composites had relatively the same values (1,36 ± 0,45) MPa for VR sandwich composite and (1,32 ± 0,02) MPa for ADS sandwich composite. The damage occurred in the PU foam core, and delamination occurred in the skin of the sandwich composites."
