Crystal, David, 1941-
"In recent years, the Internet has come to dominate our lives. E-mail, instant messaging and chat are rapidly replacing conventional forms of correspondence, and the Web has become the first port of call for both information enquiry and leisure activity.
How is this affecting language? There is a widespread view that as ‘technospeak’ comes to rule, standards will be lost. In this book, David Crystal argues the reverse: that the Internet has encouraged a dramatic expansion in the variety and creativity of language.
Covering a range of Internet genres, including e-mail, chat and the Web, this is a revealing account of how the Internet is radically changing the way we use language. This second edition has been thoroughly updated to account for more recent phenomena, with a brand new chapter on blogging and instant messaging. Engaging and accessible, it will continue to fascinate anyone who has ever used the Internet.

This essay focuses on internet language matters in Korea which includes what makes the internet language spread fast, and various effects on the cyber space as well as the real situation. As Korea recently became internet powerhouse, Koreans use the internet spontaneously and naturally for work or just enjoyment. As time passed by, the unique languages appeared rapidly and the following effects also occurred disorderedly. The effects make huge impacts on the cyber space and they remain in the real life. The internet languages in Korea cause the country unification problems, destructions and corruptions of standard language, and the confusion of teenagers. In addition, the internet languages nowadays bring serious phenomena which threaten Korean traditional situations and culture. Since Koreans cannot stop the change of language uses, it is suggested that Koreans try to prevent the related problems and make good effort to use the language according to time and space.

Masterman, Margaret
"Margaret Masterman was a pioneer in the field of computational linguistics. Working in the earliest days of language processing by computer, she believed that meaning, not grammar, was the key to understanding languages, and that machines could determine the meaning of sentences. She was able, even on simple machines, to undertake sophisticated experiments in machine translation, and carried out important work on the use of semantic codings and thesauri to determine the meaning structure of text. This volume brings together Masterman’s groundbreaking papers for the first time. Through his insightful commentaries, Yorick Wilks argues that Masterman came close to developing a computational theory of language meaning based on the ideas of Wittgenstein, and shows the importance of her work in the philosophy of science and the nature of iconic languages. Of key interest in computational linguistics and artificial intelligence."

"This book concerns non-linguistic knowledge required to perform computational natural language understanding (NLU). The main objective of the book is to show that inference-based NLU has the potential for practical large scale applications. First, an introduction to research areas relevant for NLU is given. "
