"What is critical theory, and to what extent can it claim to exist as a freestanding entity independent of the object of enquiry? Is the much discussed gulf between Anglo-Saxon empiricism and Continental poststructuralism more apparent than real? In The myth of theory William Righter explores the nature of thinking about literature, and the assumed polarities between the abstract reasonings of philosophy and the concrete manoeuvres of critical practice. He goes on to examine the role of theory in critical observation, through extended case studies of the work of critics including Barthes, Bloom, Poulet, Eliot, Empson, Kristeva and Derrida. His underlying argument is that criticism uses theory, but is never effectively directed or controlled by it: the inherent radicalism built into critical practice fragments and transforms general concepts in the act of applying them."

Jurgen Habermas's critical theory is a theoretical project that combines sociological analysis and philosophical criticism to explain the structure of contemporary capitalist society, and design a theoretical design that aims to emancipate the dominative structure of society.
The thesis that Habermas wants to maintain is that emancipation is possible because in the area of human praxis, there is a type of rationality in the act of communication. Communication always aims to achieve an intersubjective understanding on the basis of rational consensus.
In the perspective of Marxist studies. Habermas's critical theory continues the tradition of cultural Marxism research (Cultural Marxism), which directs its attention to the problem of the superstructure. This perspective is a critique of Orthodox Maexism which is deterministic and dogmatic in nature."

"Do the various forms of literary theory - deconstruction, Marxism, new historicism, feminism, post-colonialism, and cultural/digital studies - have anything in common? If so, what are the fundamental principles of theory? What is its ideological orientation? Can it still be of use to us in understanding basic intellectual and ethical dilemmas of our time? These questions continue to perplex both students and teachers of literary theory. Habib finds the answers in theory's largely unacknowledged roots in the thought of German philosopher Hegel. Hegel's insights continue to frame the very terms of theory to this day. Habib explains Hegel's complex ideas and how they have percolated through the intellectual history of the last century. This book will interest teachers and students of literature, literary theory and the history of ideas, illuminating how our modern world came into being, and how we can better understand the salient issues of our own time."
