"Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi tokoh Latina dengan meneliti Season 1 drama komedi televisi AS, Devious Maids. Sejak kemunculannya, serial ini telah menjadi kontroversi, baik di dalam maupun di luar komunitas Latin karena menampilkan kehidupan lima tokoh Latinas yang bekerja sebagai pembantu rumah tangga di Beverly Hills. Penggambaran yang demikian dikhawatirkan akan memperkuat stereotip negatif Latina. Namun, close reading pada lima tokoh Latina menunjukkan bahwa serial TV ini menawarkan hal yang lebih. Serial ini membuat tokoh Latina "terlihat" melalui upaya "decentering white dan menempatkan tokoh Latina sebagai karakter utama serta pada saat yang sama mendekonstruksi beberapa stereotip Latina. Beberapa konsep, seperti kategorisasi stereotip Latina dan "decentering white" digunakan untuk menginterpretasi serial tersebut. Hasil dari analisis skripsi menunjukkan bahwa meskipun terdapat upaya untuk membuat Latina "terlihat", serial ini belum sepenuhnya membalikkan stereotip Latina.

This undergraduate thesis aims to analyze the representation of Latinas by examining the first season of US television drama comedy, Devious Maids. The show has been a controversy either within or outside Latin community since it represents the lives of five Latinas working as maids in Beverly Hills that appears to reinforce the negative stereotypes of Latinas. However, a close reading on all five Latina characters shows that the TV series offers more. The show gives visibility to the Latinas by decentering the white characters and putting the Latinas as main characters while at the same time deconstructing some Latina stereotypes. Some concepts, such as Latina stereotype categorizations and decentering white were used in interpreting the text. This thesis also discusses the representation of Latinas regarding sexuality issue and finds ambivalence in it. The result of the analysis shows that even though visibility is given to the Latina characters, the show has not fully deconstructed the stereotypes of Latina."

"Serial TV Breaking Bad 2008 - 2013 merupakan salah satu yang terbaik di antara serial lainnya yang bertemakan kejahatan dan Narkoba. Popularitas serial ini telah mendunia karena kualitas plot, akting, dan produksi yang luar biasa, serta memberikan nuansa baru kepada penonton. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis serial ini tentang bagaimana serial ini telah menetapkan kode baru di antara serial TV sejenisnya. Hingga saat ini, sepertinya belum ada penelitian yang mengkaji Breaking Bad tentang dampaknya terhadap industri pertelevisian, khususnya yang mengkajii tentang representasi terhadap identitas. Semua representasi yang ada dalam Breaking Bad pada akhirnya mempengaruhi serial ini hingga dapat menghasilkan tren baru pada industri pertelevisian. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori identitas budaya dan teori representasi dari Stuart Hall, karena serial ini akan dianalisis dengan pendekatan budaya. Breaking Bad memiliki oposisi biner yang kompleks, pemilihan setting yang unik, dan representasi identitas yang bersifat metafor. Tiga hal tersebut digambarkan sedemikan rupa sehingga memiliki peran penting dalam menetapkan kode yang baru bahwa adanya pahlawan bukanlah suatu keharusan, dan kisah yang hebat dapat terjadi tidak hanya di kota-kota besar.

In terms of drug related crime TV series, Breaking Bad 2008 2013 appears to be one of the best among the others. The popularity of this series has spread all over the world due to its outstanding plot, acting, and production. Breaking Bad delivers a fresh nuance to the audience. This paper aims to analyze the series based on how it has set new codes among this kind of TV series. Up until now, there seems to be no research that examines the series in terms of its impact towards the industry, specifically, ones that examine the representation of identity in the series. All of those representations eventually affect the entire show to offer a new trend in the industry. Theories that are used are theory of cultural identity and theory of representation from Stuart Hall because the series will be analyzed with cultural approach. Breaking Bad offers a complex binary opposition within its characters, unusual selection of setting, and metaphorical representations of identity. These characters with their unusual and dramatic characterization, setting, and representations of identity have roles in setting the new codes that a hero is not a must, and a great story can be made not only in big cities."

"Banyak penelitian yang telah dilakukan mengenai perempuan Latin dan representasi mereka di pertelevisian Amerika. Akan tetapi, tidak banyak yang membahas ambivalensi dalam representasi itu sendiri. Esai ini membahas bagaimana salah satu karakter Latin di sitkom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Rosa Diaz, menegosiasi tiga kategorisasi terkait stereotip perempuan Latin milik Gary D. Keller 1994. Dengan menggunakan kerangka yang sama, dapat dilihat bahwa karakter Rosa Diaz dan apa yang ia representasikan memilik bentuk yang multidimensi dan kompleks.

Many researches have been conducted when it comes to Latinas and their representations in American television. However, not many have brought up the ambivalence in the representation itself. This essay examines how one of the main Latina characters from the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine 2013 , Rosa Diaz, negotiates Gary D. Keller's 1994 three categorizations of Latina stereotypes. By using the same framework, it is evident that Rosa Diaz character along with what she represents is multidimensional and complex."

In The Heights 2008 adalah salah satu karya teater musikal Broadway populer yang mencoba untuk melawan gambaran stereotipikal orang-orang Latin. Melalui analisis karakter menggunakan konsep tiga kategori representasi perempuan Latin milik Keller 1994 , penelitian ini menganalisa representasi perempuan Latin dalam karakter Nina Rosario. Artikel ini menemukan bahwa representasi yang ada merupakan sebuah bentuk perlawanan terhadap stereotip perempuan Latin.

ABSTRACTWhile recent studies have analysed the perpetuation of Latina stereotypes in American popular culture, few research have discussed about the defiance against the stereotypes represented by certain Latina characters. The popular Broadway musical In The Heights 2008 is one of the works that tries to challenge the stereotypical portrayal of Latinos. By doing character analysis using Keller rsquo s three types of Latina representations 1994 , this paper attempts to analyse the Latina representation in the character Nina Rosario. It found that the representation manifests an act of defiance against the perpetuation of Latina stereotypes."

"Tesis ini membahas keterkaitan hubungan kekuasaan dengan kekerasan terhadap homoseksual yang terjadi di lingkungan sekolah. Metode analisis penelitian ini adalah kajian atas strategi representasi dalam adegan dan dialog serial TV Glee dengan berlandaskan pada teori wacana dan seksualitas Foucault, serta konsep gender Connell. Bentuk kekerasan yang disinyalir kerap dialami oleh homoseksual adalah kekerasan berbasis orientasi seksual, sehingga homoseksual selalu berada pada posisi tertindas dan bercitra negatif. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa kekerasan yang dialami homoseksual tidak hanya kekerasan berbasis orientasi seksual, tetapi juga kekerasan karena karakter di luar normal pada diri homoseksual, khususnya homoseksual laki-laki (gay) yang memiliki karakter feminin. Kondisi ini menjelaskan bahwa homoseksual tetap berada pada posisi tertindas namun ketertindasan ini justru berujung pada pembentukan citra positif pada kaum homoseksual.

This thesis discusses the correlation between power relation and violence against homosexuals in school. The study of the strategies of representation is used as the analysis method in analyzing the TV series scenes and dialogues based on the theory of Foucault’s concept of discourse and sexuality, and Connell’s concept of gender. Homosexuals have always been oppressed and stigmatized, and the form of violence that is allegedly faced by homosexuals is sexual orientation based violence.

The results of this research prove that not only do homosexuals suffer sexual orientation based violence, but also violence due to the homosexual character that is considered outside of the normal manner, particularly male homosexual (gay) with feminine character. These conditions explain that homosexuals remain oppressed, but still manage to build positive image."

"This study aims to examine how Modern Family sitcoms represent stereotypes about race and ethnicity through an analysis of the actors' words and actions. The data is then evaluated to see how actors represent stereotypes based on their individual characteristics. The method used is the descriptive qualitative method with a social semiotic analysis. The data was collected by observing and paying attention in detail to episodes chosen from the television series Modern Family. Stuart Hall's representation theory was employed as the base to analyze the data. The findings of the research suggest that there are various positive and negative stereotypes that are represented through dialogue, expressions, and the way actors behave.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan bagaimana sitcom Modern Family merepresentasikan stereotip terhadap ras dan etnis dengan menganalisis perkataan serta perlakuan yang dilakukan para pemerannya. Data-data tersebut kemudian dianalisis untuk mengetahui bagaimana para pemeran merepresentasikan stereotip sesuai dengan karakteristiknya masing-masing. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif menggunakan analisis semiotik sosial. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara menonton dan memperhatikan secara detail episode-episode dari serial televisi Modern Family. Teori representasi milik Stuart Hall digunakan sebagai landasan penulis dalam menganalisis penelitian ini. Hasil riset menunjukan bahwa ditemukan beberapa stereotip baik maupun buruk yang direpresentasikan melalui dialog, ekspresi dan juga cara berpakaian pemeran-pemerannya. "

"Stereotip terhadap ras atau etnis tertentu sering ditemukan di serial televisi sebagai contoh adalah Sense8 2015-2017 di Netflix. Meskipun tampaknya Sense8 ingin menyajikan sebuah acara yang memiliki keragaman dari berbagai macam ras dan etnis, stereotip dapat ditemukan pada salah satu karakter dalam acara tersebut yaitu Kala, seorang wanita Asia Selatan. Representasi Kala sebagai wanita India dalam acara tersebut adalah perjodohannya, sikap submissivenya, dan bagaimana ia harus diselamatkan oleh pria kulit putih. Tulisan ini juga mencoba untuk menganalisis patriarki dari ayah Kala. Dengan menggunakan metode tekstual analisis, tulisan ini berharap dapat mengetahui bagaimana sebuah acara televisi dapat mendukung stereotip untuk menggambarkan karakter-karakter di dalamnya.

Stereotypes of certain race or ethnicity are often found in television series, for example, in Netflix rsquo;s Sense8 2015-2017 . Even though the show intends to present diversity, stereotypes can be found in one of the characters, Kala, a South Asian woman. The representations of Kala as an Indian woman in the show are arranged marriage, her submissiveness, and how she needs to be saved by a white male. This paper will also try to analyze Kala rsquo;s father rsquo;s patriarchy. Using textual analysis, this paper aims to achieve how a television series could reinforce stereotypes to portray their own characters."

"Shameless (2011) sering disebut sebagai serial TV beraliran sosial realisme yang menggambarkan secara nyata kehidupan kelas pekerja dan perjuangannya. Penelitian ini menganalisis representasi kelas pekerja dalam serial TV Shameless (2011) berdasarkan tiga tema utama yang sering muncul dalam film atau serial TV beraliran sosial realisme. Tiga tema utama tersebut adalah minimalisasi pekerjaan milik kaum pekerja, rasa rendah diri kaum pekerja, dan stigmatisasi bantuan/pertolongan oleh kaum pekerja.Metode yang digunakan untuk menganalisis representasi kelas pekerja dalam serial TV Shameless (2011) adalah metode tekstual analisis. Hasil dari penelitian ini disandingkan dengan konsep sosial realisme oleh Raymond William (1977) untuk melihat dampak representasi kelas pekerja pada aliran sosial realisme dalam serial TV Shameless (2011).Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa serial TV Shameless (2011) dapat dikategorikan sebagai serial TV beraliran sosial realisme, kecuali dalam aspek representasi kelas pekerja yang memicu munculnya prasangka buruk atau stereotip negatif pada kaum pekerja.

Shameless (2011) has always been said to be the realist social realism TV series that depicts the life of the working class and the struggle within it. This study analyzes the representation of working class on Shameless (2011) based on three main themes that are often used in social realism movie or TV series. The three main themes are the minimization of working-class job, working-class self deprecation and defeat, and stigmatization of aid/assistance by working class.The method that is used for analyzing the representation of working class in Shameless (2011) is textual analysis. The results are juxtaposed with Raymond William?s (1977) concept of social realism to see how is the representation of working class affecting the social realism within Shameless (2011).The result shows that Shameless (2011) can be considered as social realism TV series except for its representation of working class that creates prejudice to the working class itself."

"Penelitian ini membahas mengenai representasi isu-isu sosial budaya dan spiritual masyarakat imigran muslim Arab di Amerika yang ditemukan dalam serial televisi Amerika Ramy. Tontonan serial televisi karya Ramy Youssef ini menarik untuk dikaji karena mengandung cerminan perjuangan dan dilema masyarakat Arab muslim sebagai minoritas di Amerika Serikat. Hasil penelitian ini adalah jenis representasi intensional paling banyak digunakan dalam serial TV ini karena sifatnya yang dapat menccerminkan intensi pribadi tiap tokoh. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah musim pertama dari serial televisi berbahasa Arab dan Inggris yang berjudul Ramy tahun 2019. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif bersifat deskriptif. Adapun untuk menyampaikan makna-makna simbolis dari serial televisi Ramy penulis menggunakan teori representasi Stuart Hall. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menguraikan bagaimaana isu-isu identitas budaya dan spiritual survival masyarakat imigran Arab muslim direpresentasikan dalam adegan-adegan serial televisi tersebut.

This study discusses the representation of socio-cultural and spiritual issues of Arab Muslim immigrant communities in America which are found in the American television series Ramy. This television series by Ramy Youssef is interesting to study because it reflects the struggle and identity dilemma of the Muslim Arab community as a minority in the United States. The result of this study is that intentional representation type is the most widely used in this TV series because of its nature which can reflect the personal intentions of each character. The data source for this research is the first season of the American television series entitled Ramy in 2019 televised in both Arabic and English. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. As for conveying the symbolic meanings of the television series Ramy, the writer uses Stuart Hall's representation theory. The purpose of this study is to describe the cultural and spiritual identity issues of Arab Muslim immigrant communities represented in the television series' scenes."

Di tengah-tengah maraknya produk budaya populer Jepang yang mengangkat tokoh-tokoh laki-laki yang lebih lembut dan feminin sehingga turut merubah nilai-nilai maskulinitas yang ada di Jepang saat ini, Drama Audio Shinsengumi Mokuhiroku Wasurenagusa memunculkan tokoh-tokoh yang mengangkat kembali maskulinitas hegemonik yang sempat menjadi standar maskulinitas di Jepang.

The story of Shinsengumi has been adapted into many product of popular culture such as: novels, movies, comics, animation, games, audio drama and others. Their story has been romanticized, commercialized and erotisized. In the midst of the Japanese pop-culture products which keep highlighting gentle and feminine male characters boom that changed the current Japanese masculinity value, Audio Drama series Shinsengumi Mokuhiroku Wasurenagusa develops characters which bring back the hegemonic masculinity that once became standard of masculinity in Japan."
