"Film komedi romantis Hollywood dikenal tidak ramah terhadap perempuan. Anggapan ini kemudian dipertanyakan ketika tokoh utama wanita pada film The Holiday (2006) berasal dari latar belakang budaya yang berbeda, yaitu Amerika dan Inggris, meskipun keduanya memiliki masalah percintaan yang serupa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana produk Hollywood menggambarkan kuasa perempuan Amerika dan Inggris dengan mengangkat isu relasi kuasa dalam hubungan romantis masing-masing tokoh. Dengan menggunakan analisis semiotik visual pada delapan scene yang telah dipilih, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa perempuan Amerika digambarkan sebagai lebih berkuasa daripada perempuan Inggris dalam hubungan romantis meskipun dinamika keduanya serupa.

Hollywood romantic comedy has been known to be unfriendly to women. This notion is questioned when the female leading characters in The Holiday (2006) have different cultural backgrounds, American and British, yet both encounter similar relationship problems. This research aims at finding out how this Hollywood product portrays the power of American and British women using their power in romantic relationships as the main issue. Utilizing visual semiotic analysis in eight selected scenes, the research finds that American woman is portrayed more powerful than the British in romantic relationships although their dynamics of power are alike."

"Asian Americans have been portrayed in a stereotypical light in numerous genres of Hollywood films including romantic comedy (romcom). Always Be My Maybe (2019) sheds a different light on Asian American representation in the romcom genre, which has been dominated by stories of white characters. Drawing on the specific trope in romcom namely the ‘slacker-striver romance’ and Asian American representation in films, this article argues that the slacker striver romance consequently affects Asian American representation in Always Be My Maybe (2019). Using the cinematic analysis method, this paper suggests that the film battles the model minority myth which expects Asian Americans to be successful, and it contests the lotus blossom stereotype which paints Asian American women as subservient. Furthermore, the evidence concludes that the film criticizes the slacker-striver romance’s usage of the woman as ‘tools’ to help the man grow up and emphasizes the importance of mutual support as well as understanding in a relationship. Therefore, Always Be My Maybe (2019) provides a distinct approach in representing Asian Americans and their journey in finding love with the light-hearted tone of a romantic comedy.

Orang-orang Asia Amerika telah direpresentasikan dengan stereotip dalam berbagai genre film Hollywood termasuk komedi romantis (romcom). Film Always Be My Maybe (2019) menyoroti representasi Asia Amerika dalam genre romcom, yang umumnya didominasi oleh cerita karakter kulit putih. Menggunakan salah satu trope dalam genre romcom yaitu ‘slacker-striver romance’ dan representasi Asian Amerika untuk menganalisis film Always Be My Maybe (2019), artikel ini berpendapat bahwa trope slacker-striver romance mempengaruhi representasi karakter Asia Amerika dalam film ini. Melalui metode analisis sinematik, kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa film tersebut menyanggah mitos model minoritas yang mengharapkan kesukseskan orang Asia Amerika serta menentang stereotip lotus blossom yang menggambarkan wanita Asia Amerika selalu tunduk. Lebih jauh, bukti yang dipresentasikan dalam studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa film ini mengkritik bagaimana trope slacker-striver romance menggunakan karakter-karakter wanita sebagai ‘alat’ untuk membantu karakter-karakter pria tumbuh dewasa dan menekankan pentingnya dukungan serta pengertian yang seimbang dalam satu hubungan. Oleh karena itu, film Always Be My Maybe (2019) mengajukan pendekatan tersendiri dalam merepresentasikan orang-orang Asia Amerika dan perjalanan cinta mereka dengan nuansa komedi romantis yang ringan. "Serial drama Korea menjadi salah satu bentuk budaya populer yang disukai oleh masyarakat. Studi-studi sebelumnya telah membahas mengenai terpaan media massa pada tayangan serial drama Korea, hiperrealitas pada film dan drama serta dampak hiperrealitas di film dan drama pada penonton. Namun studi-studi tersebut seakan menganggap bahwa setiap penonton memiliki dampak terpaan yang sama terhadap serial drama Korea. Argumentasi dalam penelitian ini bahwa penonton bukan aktor yang pasif maka perkembangan serial drama Korea tidak memberikan dampak hiperrealitas yang sama pada semua penontonnya. Hal itu dikarenakan penonton mendapat terpaan film maupun serial TV yang begitu banyak, sehingga mereka sudah memiliki preferensi tersendiri terhadap suatu tayangan. Penelitian ini mengambil kasus serial drama Korea dengan genre romantis, drama dan komedi dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif, mengumpulkan data dari wawancara mendalam serta pengumpulan studi-studi literatur sejenis. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ditemukan, pertama serial drama Korea menawarkan cerita-cerita yang identik dengan nuansa romantisme, kedua setiap penonton memiliki pemahaman dan penerimaan yang berbeda pada serial drama Korea. Hal itu yang memunculkan adanya perbedaan dampak hiperrealitas serial drama Korea pada penonton. Ada beberapa penonton membentuk nilai atau pandangan baru terutama mengenai percintaan, pasangan, pertemanan dan keluarga serta ada pula penonton yang hanya sekedar menonton tanpa mempengaruhi kehidupannya.

Korean drama series became one of the popular forms of culture favored by the public. Previous studies have discussed the exposure of mass media to Korean drama series, hyperreality in films and drama and the impact of hyperreality on film and drama to the audience. However, these studies seem to assume that every audience has the same impact of exposure to Korean drama series. The argument in this study that the audience is not a passive actor then the development of Korean drama series did not give the same effect of hyperreality on all audience. That 39 s because the audience gets a lot of movies and TV series, so they already have their own preference for an impression.

This study takes the case of Korean drama series with the romantic genre, drama and comedy using qualitative methods, collecting data from in depth interviews and collecting similar literature studies. Based on the results of the study found, the first Korean drama series offers stories that are identical to the nuances of romance, secondly each audiences has a different understanding and acceptance of Korean drama series. This led to differences in the impact of hyperreality Korean drama series on the audiences. There are some audiences forming new values or views, especially on romance, couples, friends, and family, and there are also audiences who just watch without affecting their life."
