"Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas kesalahan bentuk verba kala lampau yang sering dilakukan oleh mahasiswa pemelajar bahasa Inggris beserta faktor penyebabnya. Dalam penelitian ini, jenis verba yang diteliti difokuskan pada penggunaan verba tidak beraturan (VTB), verba beraturan (VB), verba be, verba modal, dan verba did. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Metode kualitatif paling dominan digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan kesalahan bentuk verba kala lampau. Metode kuantitatif digunakan untuk melihat frekuensi kemunculan kesalahan bentuk verba kala lampau. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berasal dari hasil tulisan mahasiswa pemelajar bahasa Inggris dari semester 2, semester 4, dan semester 6. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 341 kesalahan bentuk verba kala lampau yang dilakukan oleh informan dari semester 2 sampai semester 6. Kesalahan bentuk verba kala lampau yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah VTB, yaitu sebanyak 147 atau 43%. Sementara itu, kesalahan bentuk verba kala lampau yang paling sedikit ditemukan adalah verba do, yaitu sebanyak 25 atau 7%. Kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut paling banyak ditemukan pada tulisan mahasiswa dari semester 6, yaitu sebanyak 129 atau 38%. Sementara itu, kesalahan yang ditemukan pada tulisan mahasiswa dari semester 2 dan 4 memiliki jumlah yang sama, yaitu masing-masing sebanyak 106 atau 31%. Faktor terjadinya kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut didominasi oleh adanya faktor intrabahasa, kemudian faktor antarbahasa. Artinya, kesalahan-kesalahan yang ditemukan pada hasil tulisan mahasiswa pemelajar bahasa Inggris semester 2, 4, dan 6 disebabkan oleh kesulitan mereka dalam mempelajari kaidah gramatika bahasa Inggris.

This study aims at discussing the most frequent errors of tenses application made by college students learning English along with its factors. In this study, the focuse is on the use of irregular verbs (VTB), regular verbs (VB), be, modals, and did. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are employed in this study. However, the most dominant method used is the qualitative method to describe the errors in past tense verb form. On the other hand, quantitative method was utilized to help the researcher to discover the frequency of the appearance of errors in using past tense verbs. The data were collected from the texts written by college students who are learning English from semester 2, 4, and 6. The result of this study indicates that there were 341 past tense verb errors made by informants from semester 2 until semester 6. The most dominant error is VTB which is 147 errors or equals to 43%. On the other hand, the least dominant error is do, appearing only 25 errors or 7%. Those errors are mostly found in the writings of semester 6 students, 129 occurence or 38%. Mean while, errors found in the writings of semester 2 and 4 students are 106 occurance or 31% respectively. Factors underlying those errors are mostly dominated by intralingual, and then interlingual factors. It means that those errors found in the semester 2, 4, and 6 students writings are caused by the difficulty faced by them in learning English grammatical rules."
