"Skripsi ini berisi tentang perbandingan citra perempuan kepala keluarga yang digambarkan oleh Zinaida dalam novel ПЕРВАЯ ЛЮБОВЬ karya pengarang laki-laki Rusia Ivan Sergeevic Turgenev dengan tokoh Scarlett dalam novel Gone with the Wind karya pengarang perempuan Amerika Serikat Margaret Mitchell. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif analisis dan mengaitkannya dengan teori feminisme. Kedua tokoh ini berhasil menunjukkan kemampuan mereka untuk berada dalam posisi laki-laki sebagai kepala keluarga, namun ada yang berbeda dari tidakan yang mereka lakukan. Tindakan Zinaida tidak seaktif Scarlett. Hal ini disebabkan oleh Zinaida yang karya laki-laki dan Scarlett karya perempuan.

This mini thesis compares about two women's image as the head of the family inside two novels, between the character of Zinaida in ПЕРВАЯ ЛЮБОВЬ by Russian male author, Ivan Sergeevic Turgenev and Scarlett in Gone with the Wind by American female author, Margaret Mitchell. This research is using the method of descriptive analysis combined with the feminism theory. Both of this characters have demonstrated their ability to be the head of their family, but they show differences in their acts. Zinaida is less active than Scarlett. This is caused by the difference of the author. Zinaida was written by a male author and Scarlett was written by a woman."

"Latar belakang tesis ini adalah Amerika pada tahun 1930-an yang ketika itu dilanda depresi besar yang menjatuhkan ekonomi Amerika. Pada masa depresi tersebut, banyak orang Amerika yang kehilangan pekerjaan mereka. Dalam keadaan tidak bekerja ini banyak di antara mereka yang kehilangan tempat tinggal mereka. Salah satu girl Amerika pada masa ini adalah adanya perkampungan "Hovervilles", di sebuah taman di New York. Di tempat inilah orang-orang yang tidak mempunyai tempat tinggal berteduh. Ciri lainnya adalah antrian panjang orang-orang yang menanti jatah roti dan sup di dapur-dapur umum yang dibuka di seluruh kota. Seiring dengan bertambahnya waktu keadaan menjadi lebih baik. Banyak orang yang mendapatkan pekerjaan dari proyek-proyek New Deal. Pokok bahasan tesis ini adalah suksesnya Gone With The Wind pada tahun 1930-an. Tesis ini mencari sebab-sebab sukses tersebut berkaitan dengan kondisi, pemikiran dan nilai-nilai yang ada di dalam masyarakat Amerika pada tahun 1930-an yang dihubungkan dengan tema yang ada di dalam novel tersebut. Sukses dari Gone With The Wind pada tahun 1930-an pada masa depresi ini adalah karena novel ini memberikan gambaran-gambaran yang ingin dilihat oleh masyarakat Amerika. Gambaran-gambaran tersebut adalah kemakmuran Amerika, semangat besar di dalam memperjuangkan kehidupan, bersatunya keluarga besar di dalam keadaan yang sulit dan keadaan yang saling menguntungkan bagi orang kulit putih dan orang kulit hitam.

The background of this thesis is America in the 1930's when it was hit by the great depression. During the depression, a lot of Americans were jobless and homeless. One of the characteristics of this time was "Hovervilles", the park in New York where homeless people made their homes. Another characteristic of this time was the long lines people wailed for their food at the kitchen soup and breadlines sprang up all over the cities. As time went by, things got better. People were helped by the projects which created jobs for them.

The point of this thesis is the success of Gone With The Wind during the 1930's. This thesis finds out the reasons of that success in connection to the conditions, thought and values in the American society in the 1930?s, which are related to the themes, conveyed in the novel.

The success of Gone With The Wind in the .1930's during the great depression is because the novel gave the pictures American people at that time wanted to see. The pictures that Americans wanted to see are the abundance of America, the high spirit that Americans have in times of hardness, the positive values American family holds in the society and the good relationship between white people and African Americans, These positive pictures gave people the confidence to fight for their lives during the depression."
