"Skripsi ini berisi pembahasan tiga novel karya pengarang novel Amerika yaitu Frank Norris (1870-1902). Ketiga novel tersebut adalah The Octopus, The Pit, dan McTeague. Pembahasan tersebut bertujuan mengungkapkan adanya suatu kecederungan dalam ketiga novel tersebut yaitu besarnya pengaruh gagasan aliran naturalisme pada pengarang dalam menciptakan tokoh-tokohnya.Analisa ditekankan pada aspek penokohan dalam ketiga novel tersebut, sejauh manakah tokoh-tokoh dalam ketiga novel tersebut mencerminkan manusia-manusia lemah yang dikuasai faktor eksternal maupun internal, faktor-faktor yang menguasai hidup manusia menurut aliran naturalisme. Penulis mengetengahkan tiga novel Frank Norris yang mempunyai persamaan dalam ciri tema naturalisme. Analisa dipusatkan pada aspek tokoh di dalam masing-masing novel, kemudian penulis menarik kesimpulan tentang seluruh tokoh ketiga novel tersebut.Di dalam pendahuluan penulis mengetengahkan sedikit riwayat hidup pengarang dan gagasan-gagasan yang tampaknya mempengaruhi penulisan karya-karyanya. Pada bagian kesimpulan, penulis mengetengahkan kesimpul_an tentang seluruh tokoh ketiga novel yang dibahas. Penulis menyimpulkan seberapa jauh tokoh-tokoh tersebut menunjukkan keadaan manusia menurut pandangan aliran naturalisme. Menurut aliran naturalisme, faktor lingkungan dan faktor internal menguasai seluruh hidup manusia secara mutlak."
