""Once celebrated in the Western media as a shining example of a 'liberal' and 'tolerant' Islam, Indonesia since the end of the Soeharto regime (May 1998) has witnessed a variety of developments that bespeak a conservative turn in the country’s Muslim politics. In this timely collection of original essays, Martin van Bruinessen, our most distinguished senior Western scholar of Indonesian Islam, and four leading Indonesian Muslim scholars explore and explain these developments. Each chapter examines recent trends from a strategic institutional perch: the Council of Indonesian Muslim scholars, the reformist Muhammadiyah, South Sulawesi's Committee for the Implementation of Islamic Shari'a, and radical Islamism in Solo. With van Bruinessen's brilliantly synthetic introduction and conclusion, these essays shed a bright light on what Indonesian Muslim politics was and where it seems to be going. The analysis is complex and by no means uniformly dire. For readers interested in Indonesian Muslim politics, and for analysts interested in the dialectical interplay of progressive and conservative Islam, this book is fascinating and essential reading."

"Taking a cue from the story of Trishanku-the mythological king who aspired to reach heaven while still alive-Deepak Kumar builds a compelling narrative on the state of contemporary India. Much like Trishanku, who only succeeded in being stuck in limbo between heaven and earth, India appears to be oscillating at the crossroads of modernity and tradition; development and corruption; and diversity and communalism. The Trishanku Nation presents a provocative account of a country marked by its contradictions and seamlessly combines everyday social history with academic insights. All through its civilizational progress India has defied simple categorizations. This suppleness has been its greatest strength and, to a large extent, also responsible for its myriad problems. This volume dwells on this predicament of post-Independence India. Based on memory, both historical and personal, it begins with the depiction of life in a mofussil town and moves on to examine closely issues of caste, religion, communalism, governance, corruption, education, science, culture, and so forth, as seen in the last five decades. Presented with rare verve and wit, and by using the lens of personal experiences, these rumblings help unfurl layers of life in the Indian subcontinent.

"In 2019, the Indian parliament enacted the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which gives a fast-track citizenship for immigrants of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian faiths from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The BJP, a populist party with Hindutva as the ideological foundation to establish a Hindu homeland in India, propelled communal rhetoric that triggered significant protests from Muslim groups, citing discrimination against Muslim immigrants. This article explores how the BJP politicizes religious identity within the context of the CAA. It delves into the involvement of Muslim and student groups, as well as opposition parties, in Parliament to influence CAA policy dynamics. Despite massive protests, the BJP effectively utilized its popularity to implement the CAA, intensifying concerns among Hindu voters and mobilizing their political support. This article underscores that the politicization of religious identity results in majoritarian policies that pose a threat to democratic principles when populist in power.
