"This book presents a comprehensive review on latest research and development trends for design optimization of mechanical elements and devices. Using examples of various mechanical elements and devices, the possibilities for design optimization with advanced optimization techniques are demonstrated. Basic and advanced concepts of traditional and advanced optimization techniques are presented, along with real case studies, results of applications of the proposed techniques, and the best optimization strategies to achieve best performance are highlighted. Furthermore, a novel advanced optimization method named teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) is presented in this book and this method shows better performance with less computational effort for the large scale problems."

"This book presents the development of optimization platform for geotechnical engineering which is one of the key components in smart geotechnics. The book discusses the fundamentals of the optimization algorithm with constitutive models of soils. Helping readers easily understand the optimization algorithm applied in geotechnical engineering, this book first introduces the methodology of the optimization-based parameter identification, and then elaborates the principle of three newly developed efficient optimization algorithms, followed by the ideas of a variety of laboratory tests and formulations of constitutive models. Moving on to the application of optimization methods in geotechnical engineering, this book presents an optimization-based parameter identification platform with a practical and concise interface based on the above theories. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate-level teaching in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering and other related engineering specialties. It is also of use to industry practitioners, due to the inclusion of real-world applications, opening the door to advanced courses on both modeling and algorithm development within the industrial engineering and operations research fields."

"This book presents recent developments in nonlinear dynamics with an emphasis on complex systems. The volume illustrates new methods to characterize the solutions of nonlinear dynamics associated with complex systems. This book contains the following topics: new solutions of the functional equations, optimization algorithm for traveling salesman problem, fractals, control, fractional calculus models, fractional discretization, local fractional partial differential equations and their applications, and solutions of fractional kinetic equations."

"Themes that are highlighted include :
- the role of language : the models developed for engineering design have resulted in new ways of talking about technological systems
- communities of practice : related to the previous point, particular engineering communities have particular ways of sharing and developing knowledge
- graphical (re)presentation : engineers have developed many ways of reducing quite complex mathematical models to more simple representations
- reification : highly abstract mathematical models are turned into ‘objects’ that can be manipulated almost like components of a physical system
- machines : not only the currently ubiquitous digital computer, but also older analogue devices, slide rules, physical models, wind tunnels and other small-scale simulators, as well as mechanical, electrical and electronic analogue computers
- mathematics and modelling as a bridging tool between disciplines
