The main objective of this research is how food can reflect the complexity of the forming of women identity in the novel Fasting Feasting by Anita Desai. The forming of women identity represented in the relationship of female characters with food is gained through discourse analysis. From the choice of words which shows the closeness relation of female characters with food, it exposes identities that support the stereotyped women identities which are formed by the patriarchal society. However, this forming is also done by the female characters. Two mother characters perpetuate the stereotyped of women identities to their children by telling stories and making them accustomed to rituals related with food in the family.
It can be concluded that the forming of stereotyped identities is not only done by the patriarchal society, but also by the women. Women, who are objected in the forming of their identities, are also active in creating the same identities to the next female generation. Anita Desai as the author uses the novel to reveal her ideology which questioning women position in the creation of their identities. Through the women relation with food, Desai demonstrates that women are capable of playing with their position in the forming of the stereotyped women identities.

"In this paper, fasting refers to the Muslim fast, defined as refraining from eating and drinking and all other activities that annul the fast from sunrise to sunset (approximately 14 hours). Fasting can be performed at any time in the year, but is usually performed during certain the compulsory month or recommended days.
The fasting of the month of Ramadan is an activity that is health-wise quite difficult, since the person has to refrain from eating and drinking from sunset to sunrise (approximately 13 to 14 days per day) for 29-30 consecutive days.
