"Awal abad ke-21 merupakan masa dimana film-film superhero mulai bangkit menjadi genre yang populer di Hollywood. Selama satu dekade terakhir, film-film superhero menjadi salah satu genre yang paling populer dan menguntungkan dalam industri perfilman. Meski begitu, masih terdapat ketidakseimbangan dalam representasi tokoh perempuan di genre ini. Ketidakseimbangan tersebut terlihat tidak hanya dalam jumlah karakter namun juga dalam kualitas tokoh perempuan tersebut. Makalah ini menganalisis penggambaran tokoh Black Widow dalam film The Avengers sebagai heroine yang mendobrak stereotip perempuan di film superhero. Berdasarkan teori dan konsep gender dari penulis-penulis feminis seperti Simone de Beauvoir dan Kate Milltet, makalah ini membahas konstruksi gender yang muncul dalam film-film superhero dan bagaimana film The Avengers menyikapi isu feminis melalui penggambaran tokoh Black Widow. Tujuan dari makalah ini adalah untuk menunjukkan pentingnya tokoh perempuan yang mampu memiliki karakteristik maskulin namun tetap juga mempertahankan aspek-aspek feminin mereka.

The early of 21st century was the period when superhero movies started to revive into a popular genre in Hollywood. Throughout the last decade, superhero movies became one of the most popular and profitable genres in the film industry. However, there is still an inequality in the representation of women in the superhero movies. The inequality is seen not only in the quantity of female characters, but also in the quality of their roles. This paper analyzes the depiction of Black Widow in The Avengers as a heroine who breaks the stereotypes of women in superhero movies. Based on some theories and concepts of gender from feminist writers such as Simone de Beauvoir and Kate Millet, this paper examines gender construction that occurs in superhero movies and how The Avengers addresses the issue trough the portrayal of Black Widow. The goal of this paper is to show the importance of having female characters that can exhibit masculine traits, yet still maintain their feminine aspects."

"Pada 2019, Black Widow oleh Cate Shortland dirilis. Ceritanya berfokus pada karakter tentara super perempuan, Natasha Romanoff dan masa lalunya sebagai black widow (tentara super perempuan terlatih) dan membahas topik keibuan, keluarga, dan peran gender dalam bentuk semu. Artikel ini menganalisa dan mengembangkan teori keibuan semu atau inkonvensional milik Giallombardo dari studinya terhadap perempuan di penjara (1966). Menurutnya, di bawah keadaan yang keras, perempuan dapat membuat komunitas di mana salah satu dapat mengambil peran sebagai ibu di antara lainnya dan memiliki nilai keibuan, walaupun ia bukan ibu biologis lainnya. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk meneliti koneksi semu yang dapat dilihat dari interaksi antara kelompok yang terdiri dari Natasha dan black widow lainnya dengan membandingkannya dengan teori keibuan semu Giallombardo. Artikel ini menemukan bahwa Natasha Romanoff memiliki ciri keibuan semu yang tidak terlihat secara langsung dimana ia menerapkan ciri keibuan tradisional pada black widow lainnya yang disebabkan oleh tekanan keadaan sekitarnya yang keras.

In 2019, Black Widow by Cate Shortland is released. The story centers around the female super-soldier, Natasha Romanoff and her past as a black widow (trained female super soldier) and touches on the topic of motherhood, family, and gender roles in a pseudo form. This article analyzes and develops Giallombardo’s theory of pseudo or unconventional motherhood from her study of women in prison (1966). According to her, under harsh circumstances, women can create a community in which one will take the role of mother among others and possess motherhood values, despite not being the biological mother of the others. This article aims to examine these pseudo connections that can be seen through the interactions between the groups created by Natasha and the other black widows by comparing it with Giallombardo’s theory of pseudo or unconventional motherhood. The findings in this article states that Natasha Romanoff possesses pseudo motherhood traits where she performs traditional motherhood traits on the other black widows that are triggered by her harsh surroundings."

"Black Panther (2018) adalah film superhero kulit hitam pertama dari Marvel Cinematic Universe yang dijadikan sebagai momentum untuk selebrasi kebudayaan orang kulit hitam dengan cara menampilkan kehebatan dan superioritas mereka. Berdasarkan film Hollywood sebelumnya, orang kulit hitam selalu digambarkan dengan cara yang negatif, disaat orang kulit putih digambarkan dengan cara yang lebih positif. Dengan menggunakan konsep supremasi kulit putih dari Leonardo (2004), konsep imperialisme dari Narayan dan Huggins (2017), dan juga konsep kolonialisme dari Emerson (1969), penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana ide-ide supremasi orang kulit putih digambarkan dalam film Black Panther. Dalam penelitian ini ditemukan bagaimana ide-ide dari supremasi orang kulit putih digunakan dalam film Black Panther sebagai selebrasi orang kulit hitam, pada awalnya hal tersebut dikritisi oleh film ini. Penelitian ini berkontribusi untuk studi kebudayaan orang kulit hitam, khususnya dalam kritik terhadap supremasi kulit putih dalam film kulit hitam dengan menunjukan bagaimana dan mengapa hal ini bermasalah.

Black Panther (2018) is the first black superhero film from Marvel Cinematic Universe that was

used as a momentum to celebrate black culture by showing the greatness and superiority of black people. Throughout previous Hollywood films, Black people were usually portrayed negatively, while White people would be depicted more positively. Using Leonardos (2004) method of white supremacy, Narayan and Hugginss (2017) method of imperialism, and Emersons (1969) method of colonialism, this research aims to analyse how white supremacy ideas reflected in Black Panther. The finding of this research is that Black Panther used the ideas of white

supremacy to celebrate black culture, which at first had been criticized by this film. This research contributes to black culture studies on criticisms towards white supremacy in black films by showing how and why this issue is problematic."

"Skripsi ini membahas bagaimana tokoh superhero dan supervillain pada film Iron Man 3 (2013) memperlihatkan sebuah tindakan dominasi relasi kuasa. Dominasi dan relasi kuasa ini, yang terjadi melalui konflik antar tokoh, dilihat sebagai suatu pembentukan stratifikasi sosial antara manusia super dan manusia normal/ masyarakat. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan membandingkan definisi dan ideologi pada superhero dan supervillain, yang tertanam pada tokoh superhero, Iron Man dan Iron Patriot, dan tokoh supervillain, Mandarin. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat konflik yang menyebabkan dominasi dan relasi kuasa dalam pembentukan susunan kelas dalam masyarakat. Dengan mengkaji definisi dan ideologi pada tokoh-tokoh tersebut, penelitian ini diharapkan memberikan pandangan lebih luas mengenai tokoh manusia super dan membantu pembaca memahami nilai yang disampaikan dari keberadaan tokoh superhero. Kesimpulan yang diambil penulis adalah pengambaran tokoh superhero dan supervillain pada film Iron Man 3 (2013) sebagai pemilik kekuasan tertinggi memiliki fungsi sebagai pembatas yang mengatur nilai-nilai dalam masyarakat.

This undergraduate thesis discusses how superhero and supervillain characters in the film Iron Man 3 (2013) shows an act of domination and power relation between characters. Domination and power relation, that occur through the conflict between characters, are seen as an establishment of social stratification among superhuman and normal human / society. This study is conducted by comparing the definition and ideology on the superhero and supervillain in superhero characters, Iron Man and the Iron Patriot, and supervillain character, Mandarin. This study aims to look at the conflicts that led to the dominance and power relations in the establishment of class structures in the society. By reviewing the definition and ideology on these characters, this study is expected to give a broader view of superhuman characters and help the reader to understand the value delivered from superhero character. As a conclusion, the potrayals of the superhero and supervillain characters in the film Iron Man 3 (2013) as the highest power owner have a function to limit and control the values in the society."

"Film superhero telah mendominasi industri film Hollywood dan banyak di antaranya termasuk dalam daftar film-film terlaris sepanjang masa. Film superhero menjangkau jutaan orang di seluruh dunia setiap tahun, dan dengan demikian memiliki kekuatan untuk membangun ideologi dalam masyarakat, termasuk peran gender. Sayangnya, terlepas dari semua fakta ini, perempuan masih kurang terwakili dalam film-film superhero. Dalam kebanyakan kasus, perempuan dijadikan objek seksual secara berlebih (hypersexualized) atau menjadi perempuan dalam bahaya (damsel in distress). Wonder Woman (2017) dan Captain Marvel (2019) adalah dua film terbaru dalam dekade ini yang menunjukkan kemajuan dalam hal representasi perempuan. Dengan menggunakan teori tatapan laki-laki (male gaze) oleh Laura Mulvey dan Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI), saya berpendapat bahwa film-film ini menentang objektifikasi tubuh perempuan dan pandangan tradisional tentang kelemahan feminin dengan menantang tatapan laki-laki (male gaze) dan menggunakan elemen feminin sebagai sumber kekuatan.

Superhero films have dominated the box office and many are in the list of highest-grossing films of all time. They reach millions of people all over the world each year, and thus have the power to construct ideology in society, including the gender roles. Unfortunately, despite all these facts, women are still underrepresented in superhero films. In most cases, they are either hypersexualized or become damsels in distress. Wonder Woman (2017) and Captain Marvel (2019) are two recent films of the decade that show progress in terms of female representation. Using Laura Mulvey`s male gaze theory and Sandra Bem`s Sex Role Inventory, I argue that these films defy female body objectification and traditional views of feminine weakness by challenging the male gaze and using feminine elements as source of power."

"Jurnal ini merupakan studi analisis film Black Hawk Down produksi Hollywood sebagai film kepahlawanan yang kontroversial. Penulis menggunakan teori Enlightment as mass deception oleh Max Adorno dan Theodore Horkheimer yang membantu penulis dalam menganalisa film ini. Penulis menemukan bahwa film ini sudah mengalami proses komodifikasi oleh pemerintah Amerika, Pentagon setelah peristiwa 9-11. Jurnal ini juga dilengkapi dengan konsep soft power dengan temuan bahwa Amerika Serikat menggunakan film-film Hollywood sebagai soft power mereka untuk melanggengkan citra kepahlawanan Negara Amerika Serikat.

"Film merupakan sebuah media penyampaian pesan yang dapat membentuk dan mempengaruhi khalayak berdasarkan muatan pesan yang terkandung di dalamnya. Salah satu tujuan dalam pembuatan sebuah film ialah merepresentasikan kejadian-kejadian yang ada di dunia nyata dengan menyelipkan ideologi dari para pembuatnya, seperti halnya dengan film Black Panther. Menggunakan metode studi literatur, tulisan ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana representasi kelompok kulit hitam yang terdapat dalam film Black Panther. Representasi tersebut dapat dilihat dari segi budaya, bahasa (aksara) dan identitas dari kelompok mereka. Tulisan ini juga menjelaskan bagaimana identitas dari kelompok mereka yang ditampilkan dalam film dan kehidupannya di dunia nyata, serta persepsi dari masyarakat dunia mengenai kulit hitam itu sendiri.

One of the goals in making a film is to represent the events that exist in the real world by using the value of the ideology of the makers, such as discussing the film Black Panther. Using the literature study method, this paper is intended to see how the representation of black skin in the Black Panther film. "Artikel ini membahas tentang pengaruh seorang selebriti sebagai panutan (role model), khususnya bagi komunitas LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, dan Plus). Ketika media sosial dan industri hiburan menjadi kian luas, influencer dan selebritas menjadi role model di bidang gaya hidup, masalah sosial, masalah pendidikan, dan pengetahuan terhadap dunia. Oleh karena itu, terpaan media dari seorang influencer atau selebritas sebagai panutan sangat besar, terhadap kepribadian dan gaya hidup pengikutnya sehari-hari. Hal ini pun diyakini berlaku bagi kelompok audiens yang termasuk dalam komunitas LGBTQ+. Studi ini berfokus pada analisis kasus berita seorang influencer asal Amerika Serikat, Jojo Siwa, yang mengungkapkan fakta bahwa dirinya adalah bagian dari komunitas LGBTQ+ (Twersky, 2021). Analisis dilakukan dalam kerangka teori ekologi media yang mengacu pada studi tentang bagaimana media dan proses komunikasi mempengaruhi persepsi, perasaan, emosi, dan nilai manusia (West & Turner, 2007). Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari reaksi, tindakan, dan perasaan audiens yang termasuk ke dalam komunitas LGBTQ+ terhadap sosok Jojo Siwa, terutama pasca-pengakuannya kepada publik. Artikel tersebut berpendapat bahwa mengagumi selebriti sebagai panutan dapat menjadi sumber martabat, inspirasi, dan dukungan, terutama bagi komunitas LGBTQ+.

This article discusses the influence of a celebrity as a role model, especially on LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Plus) identity. As social media and the entertainment industry are becoming more extensive than ever, influencers and celebrities serve as role models in lifestyle, social issues, educational concerns, perceptions, and understanding of the world. The effect of media exposure of an influencer or celebrity as a role model is incredibly huge, affecting the audience's personalities and lifestyle daily. This notion also applies to those who adhere to the LGBTQ+ community. By adopting the media ecology theory--which refers to the study of how media and communication processes affect human perception, feeling, emotion, and value (West & Turner, 2007)--and taking the case of the response of Jojo Siwa's coming out news (Twersky, 2021), this paper studies how the LGBTQ+ community perceives this issue. This article focuses on the community's reactions, acts, and feelings towards the announcement. The study found that admiring celebrities as role models can be sources of dignity, inspiration, and support, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community."

"Penelitian dilatarbelakangi keunikan penerbitan komik “Superman; Son of Kal-El” pada preferensi seksualitas Superman. Dari segi pasar, komik berhasil memperluas jangkauannya melalui penyebaran produk digital ke kalangan minoritas seksual. Namun, dari aspek khalayak, konten komik memicu kontroversi di antara subkultur fandom setia Superman yang tidak rela identitas superhero arus utama dirusak historisitas, maskulinitas, dan aksi heroiknya. Dalam ilmu komunikasi fenomena pergeseran kemasan komik, perubahan model pemasaran dan intensi produksi merujuk pada konsep komodifikasi. Penelitian dengan tujuan untuk memberikan analisis secara kritis terhadap komodifikasi seksualitas superhero Superman yang dipilih oleh DC Comics ini, dilakukan secara kualitatif dengan paradigma kritis konstruktivisme.  Teknik pengumpulan data didasarkan pada sumber primer (teks, gambar, dan intensi produksi komik) serta elaborasi data sekunder melalui Analisis Wacana Kritis versi Fairclough. Analisis ini menitikberatkan pada teks/visual, praktik diskursif, dan praksis sosio-kultural. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pergeseran wacana tidak sepenuhnya mengubah karakter utama Superman, melainkan hanya pada Superman generasi kedua. Meskipun masih terdapat ambiguitas pada konten biseksual Superman, khalayak pemegang teguh normativitas keagamaan atau ideologi kenegaraan tertentu menolak komik ini dan mengantarkan pada penghentian produksi. Kesimpulan, komik ini berhasil menciptakan dinamika terciptanya kesadaran baru terhadap kelompok minoritas di dunia global yang jumlahnya terus meningkat signifikan. Secara bisnis, keuntungan justru diperoleh dari kontroversial dan komitmen kuat komunitas minoritas.

The background of this research is the uniqueness of comic “Superman; Son of Kal-El", regarding Superman's sexual preference. The comic has succeeded in expanding market reach through digital products distribution to sexual minorities. However, the content has sparked controversy among the subculture of Superman's loyal fandom, who reject their superhero’s mainstream new identity with damaged historicity, masculinity, and heroic actions. Communication science refers the phenomenon of changes in  comic packaging, marketing models, and production intentions as commodification concept. This research aimed at providing a critical analysis on Superman's sexuality commodification was conducted qualitatively with a critical constructivism paradigm. Data collection technique is based on primary sources (text, images, and comic production intentions), and secondary data elaboration through the Fairclough version of Critical Discourse Analysis.This analysis focuses on text/visuals, discursive practices, and socio-cultural praxis. The result shows that the discourse changes do not completely change the first Superman’s character, but the second generation of Superman. Despite ambiguity in Superman's bisexual content, religious audiences reject this comic and has led to production halt. In conclusion, commodification that leads comic production and distribution focus on the market has failed. Meanwhile, audience commodification has succeeded in creating new awareness of minority groups, whose numbers continue to increase significantly. This also reinforces the findings that comic publishers gain profits from the controversial and strong commitment of the minority groups and the fandom subculture of Superman lovers."
