"This essay analyzes T. Shevchenko’s Haidamaky (1841) and Shin Dongyup’s Geum Gang (1967) from the perspective of cultural history, focusing on the preservation of collective memory through oral tradition and its culmination in historical poems. The two narrative poems have similar features: the historical meaning of the sujetevent, the structure of the poem, the character of the protagonists, and the way in which the memory of the people is fixed in poems. Both poems claim to be based on collective memories transmitted by the elder generation to the younger. Household and village storytelling, and songs of itinerant people, contribute to spreading the memory of historical events and to consolidating national consciousness. Historical poems serve as a mediator of collective memory and written history by transmitting the people’s memory in textualized form to future generations. With reference to these examples, we can reconsider the question of the making of nations and of national consciousness."

"Skripsi ini menganalisis tentang budaya kerajaaan Joseon yang direpresentasikan di dalam drama televisi Dae Jang geum. Namun, penulis membatasi masalah ini pada budaya yang berkembang di dalam lingkungan istana kerajaan, yaitu budaya kuliner dan budaya berbusana khas istana kerajaan Joseon yang direpresentasikan dalam drama tersebut. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif studi kepustakaan. Adapun teori yang digunakan untuk menganalisis objek penelitian adalah teori representasi dari Stuart Hall yang dipadukan dengan metode analisis signifying order dari Danesi. Dari hasil analisis disimpulkan bahwa representasi budaya Joseon yang ada di dalam drama televisi Dae Jang Geum lebih mendekati sistem representasi refleksi dan rekonstruksi. Dari representasi budaya Joseon dalam drama Dae Jang Geum dapat diketahui bahwa nilai-nilai budaya masa Joseon memiliki hubungan yang sangat erat dengan stratifikasi sosial yang berlaku pada masa itu.

This thesis analyzed the kingdom of Joseon royal culture that represented in the TV drama Dae Jang Geum. This research focuses on culinary and clothing culture of Joseon royal palace representated at drama. Research approach is qualitative study of reference. Research theory is the representation theory of Stuart Hall which is combined with analytical methods signifying order from Danesi.

The result of the research shows that existing Joseon cultural representation at TV drama Dae Jang Geum is representation of reflection and reconstruction system. Through the result of this research can be known that representation of Joseon culinary and clothing culture in Dae Jang Geum drama shows us the strong influence of the social stratification at Joseon dynasty."
