"The first part deals with philosophies that have had a significant input, positive or negative, on the search for truth. The second part discusses a few practical problems that are being actively discussed in the literature, from climatology and information science to economics and legal philosophy. This discussion is informed by the general principles analyzed in the first part of the book. The third and final part of the book tackles a set of key concepts, such as those of indicator, energy, and existence. "

"In recent years the philosophy of information has emerged as an important area of research in philosophy. However, until now information’s philosophical history has been largely overlooked.
Information and the History of Philosophy is the first comprehensive investigation of the history of philosophical questions around information, including work from before the Common Era to the twenty-first century. It covers scientific and technology-centred notions of information, views of human information processing, as well as socio-political topics such as the control and use of information in societies.
Organised into five parts, 19 chapters by an international team of contributors cover the following topics and more:
Information before 500 CE, including ancient Chinese, Greek and Roman approaches to information;
Early theories of information processing, sources of information and cognition;
Information and computation in Leibniz, visualised scientific information, copyright and social reform;
The nineteenth century, including biological information, knowledge economies and information’s role in empire and eugenics;
Recent and contemporary philosophy of information, including racialised information, Shannon information and the very idea of an information revolution.
Information and the History of Philosophy is a landmark publication in this emerging field. As such, it is essential reading for students and researchers in the history of philosophy, philosophy of science and technology, and library and information studies. It is also a valuable resource for those working in subjects such as the history of science, media and communication studies and intellectual history."

"This book investigates the inherent 'impossibilities' in the political thought of Adriano Olivetti, and seeks to determine whether the Olivettian ideal lacks true consistency, or if it is, rather, an idealism which does not lose sight of reality. "

Reid, Jasper
"It deals with such interwoven topics as, the natures of body and spirit, and the question of whether or not there is a sharp ontological division between them, the nature of spatial extension in relation to each, the composition and governance of the physical world, including More?s theories of Hyle, atoms, vacuum, and the Spirit of Nature; and the life of the human soul, including its pre-existence. It approaches these topics and the systematic connections between them both historically and analytically, and seeks to do justice to the ways in which More?s system developed and changed, sometimes quite dramatically, over the course of his long career. It also explores More's intellectual relations with both his own inspirations (Plotinus, Origen, Ficino, Descartes, etc.) and with those who responded, whether positively or negatively, to his work (Leibniz, Locke, Boyle, Newton, etc.).

"This book is a collection of essays on the reception of Leibniz’s thinking in the sciences and in the philosophy of science in the 19th and 20th centuries. Authors studied include C.F. Gauss, Georg Cantor, Kurd Lasswitz, Bertrand Russell, Ernst Cassirer, Louis Couturat, Hans Reichenbach, Hermann Weyl, Kurt Gödel and Gregory Chaitin. In addition, we consider concepts and problems central to Leibniz’s thought and that of the later authors : the continuum, space, identity, number, the infinite and the infinitely small, the projects of a universal language, a calculus of logic, a mathesis universalis etc. "

"Emilie du Châtelet was one of the most influential woman philosophers of the Enlightenment. Her writings on natural philosophy, physics, and mechanics had a decisive impact on important scientific debates of the 18th century. Particularly, she took an innovative and outstanding position in the controversy between Newton and Leibniz, one of the fundamental scientific discourses of that time.
The contributions in this volume focus on this "Leibnitian turn". They analyze the nature and motivation of Emilie du Châtelet's synthesis of Newtonian and Leibnitian philosophy. Apart from the Institutions Physiques they deal with Emilie du Châtelet's annotated translation of Isaac Newton's Principia.
The chapters presented here collectively demonstrate that her work was an essential contribution to the mediation between empiricist and rationalist positions in the history of science."
