"Bangunan lepas pantai akhir ini telah menjadi suatu teknologi yang tak terbantahkan untuk pemenuhan kebutuhan dunia akan bahan bakar minyak dan gas bumi. Diatas dari semua kondisi dan situasi yang ditemui pada bangunan yang berada di atas tanah, bangunan lepas pantai memiliki permasalahan tambahan dimana letak bangunan yang berada di lingkungan laut lepas membuat efek pembebanan hidrodinamika, lingkungan dan respon dinamik menjadi pertimbangan utama dalam pendesainan bangunan lepas pantai tersebut. Kemudian, Tension Leg Platform (TLP) menunjukkan permasalahnnya sendiri dalam menghadapi efek hidrodinamika, kondisi penunjang dari pondasi bangunan dan karakter dari respon dinamik tidak hanya dari struktur itu sendiri tapi juga dari sistem pengangkat minyaknya (riser system) dan bangunan atasnya sendiri.
TLP itu sendiri merupakan bangunan yang memiliki bouyancy (mengapung) yang terikat dengan suatu sistem tali pengikat (mooring system). TLP serupa dengan banguan fixed platform konvensional namun pada TLP kekukuhan bangunan diikat oleh sistem pengikat yang tegang oleh karena adanya daya apung dari hull. Sistem pengikatnya merupakan sekumpulan tension legs atau disebut juga tendons yang terikat dengan platform dan tersambung dengan pondasi yang berada di dasar laut. Metode ini meredam pergerakan vertikal namun mendapatkan efek pergerakan horisontal. Bangunan atas dari TLP (fasilitas produksi, jalur pipa, dan menara penghisap) dari TLP dan kegiatan operasionalnya hampir sama dengan yang terjadi pada bangunan konvensional.

Offshore structure nowadays has become an unarguably demanding technology to fulfill our demands of fuel energy all around the globe. Over and above the usual conditions and situations met by land-based structures, offshore structures have the added complication of being placed in an ocean environment where hydrodynamic interaction effects, environmental loading effects, and dynamic response become major consederations in their design. In addition, Tension Leg Platform (TLP) pose its own perticular demands in terms of hydrodinamic loading effects, foundation support conditions and character of the dynamic response not only the structure itself but also of the riser system and also the top platform itself. Tension Leg Platform (TLP) itself is a bouyant platform held in place by a mooring system.
The TLP's are similar to conventional fixed platforms except that the platform is maintained on location through the use of moorings held in tension by the bouyancy of the hull. The mooring system is a set of tension legs or tendons attached to the platform and connected to a template or foundation on the seabed. This method dampens the vertical motions of the platform, but allows for the horizontal movements. The topside facilities (processing facilities, pipelines and surface tress) of the TLP and most of the daily operations are the same as for a conventional platform.
