The Norwegian language has many loan words derived from German and the languages that preceded German such as Middle Low German and Low German due to the political and economic supremacy that occurred in the Hanseatic League back in 1250 to 1450 where a huge population of Middle Low German speakers migrated to Norway. Thus, this research aims to analyze the similarities and differences between German and Norwegian, the prevalence of German language teaching in Norway, and the way Norwegian language learners adapt with the German language through the said loan words. This research uses contrastive analysis to decipher factors that helped build the similarities and differences between German and Norwegian, and uses a qualitative research method through a one-on-one, open-ended interview with three interviewees that are learning German and Norwegian simultaneously where they were asked to mention similar words in German and Norwegian that crossed their minds as the writer aims to collect evidences regarding how familiar they are with German when they have learned Norwegian, and vice versa."

"This white paper is part of a series that promotes knowledge about language technology and its potential. This analysis focused on the 23 official European languages as well as other important national and regional languages in Europe. The results of this analysis suggest that there are many significant research gaps for each language. A more detailed expert analysis and assessment of the current situation will help maximise the impact of additional research and minimize any risks. META-NET consists of 54 research centres from 33 countries that are working with stakeholders from commercial businesses, government agencies, industry, research organisations, software companies, technology providers and European universities. Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategic research agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020."
