Umberto Eco is semiotician who tries to put the theory of semiotics, as theory of reading sign, through the cultural units. Broadly speaking, semiotics refers to a prosess called semiosis, in which it is an influence, an action, and that all involve in a cooperation of three subjects, such as sign, its object, and its interpretant. His theory is strongly influenced by Charles Sanders Peirce’s thought, which if his theory is pulled further will fall in the Kantian Legacy theory.
The cultural units can be assumed as Kant’s categories on our mind as a tool for interpret. However, there is the most important thing of discovery Umberto Eco in semiotics is he successfully to differentiate the signification semiotics, as general semiotics, with the communication semiotics through the cultural units, although its main reference is still significational working on semantic field.

"The Name of the Rose, a detective novel, is set by some issues on librarianship during the Middle Age in Europe. By using discourse analysis approach, I try to know how far the concept of the librarianship was understood at that time?in the novel?based on the understanding of some concepts, starting from ?library?, ?development system?, ?collection handling?, which includes ?classification?, ?censorship system? and ?librarians? professionalism?, until some matters on borrowing and using collection. Besides, this analysis is aimed at identifying cultural values related to the librarianship. The conclusion shows that the librarianship has an important role in providing suspense elements in a detective novel."
