"Malaysia pulled itself back from the brink on 9 May 2018. That day the majority of its voting population decided to topple the Barisan Nasional government that had been in power for over 60 years and that had come to be seen as corrupt beyond redemption, and incompetent to boot. "ABSTRAK Skripsi ini membahas peran Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) dalam upaya penegakan syariat Islam di salah satu Negara bagian Malaysia, Kelantan pada kurun waktu 1978 hingga 1990. Disamping memaparkan hal-hal yang dilakukan PAS untuk mewujudkan Negara yang berlandaskan syariat Islam, penelitian ini juga menunjukan bagaimana persaingan antara PAS dengan partai Melayu lainnya, UMNO. Penelitian ini menjelaskan bagaimana upaya PAS menegakkan syariat Islam melalui pemilu harus berhadapan dengan kekuatan politik UMNO yang sangat kuat. Skripsi ini juga menyuguhkan bagaimana masyarakat Kelantan memberikan dukungan yang sangat besar kepada PAS sehingga syariat Islam yang diupayakan PAS berhasil ditegakkan meski sempat menghadapi masalah pada periode 1980-an.

ABSTRACT This undergraduate thesis discusses the role of Islamic Party of Malaysia (also called PAS) in one of the states, Kelantan, for the period 1978 to 1990. Besides describing things that are done by Islamic Party to build a state based on Islamic Sharia, this research also points out the competition between PAS and the other Malayan party, UMNO. This research describes PAS efforts to build Islamic Sharia through the general election that has to face the very strong political power of UMNO. This undergraduate thesis also points out that Kelantan society gives significant support to PAS, so that Islamic Sharia can be built though it still has face problems in 1980s."
