"Primacy suatu kota maupun kawasan perkotaan tidak hanya disebabkan oleh satu sebab (monocausal), tetapi oleh beberapa faktor. Faktor-faktor pemicu Kota Makassar sebagai kota primate selain faktor sejarah, juga kenyataan masih tetap berlakunya "The Law of the Primate City". Kota primate tidak hanya terjadi dalam skala nasional namun juga dalam skala regional/provinsi. Kota Makassar merupakan kota primate tidak hanya dari sisi dominasi jumlah penduduk tapi juga dari sisi pengaruh Kota Makassar terhadap kota-kota lainnya dan terhadap wilayah hinterlandnya. Hasil kajian dari sejarah perkembangan kota-kota di Sulawesi Selatan mendukung kenyataan bahwa Makassar sejak dahulu merupakan pusat pertumbuhan bagi wilayah Sulawesi Selatan.Dalam sistem perkotaan Provinsi Sulawesi Selatan terlihat bahwa kota yang memiliki hirarki tinggi tampak mengerucut di sekitar Kota Makassar. Kecenderungan tersebut mengindikasikan teradinya konurbasi pada kawasan Kota Makassar dan sekitarnya yang dikenal dengan Kawasan Mamminasata. Kota Makassar tidak dapat berdiri sendiri namun telah menjadi satu kesatuan dari sisi aktivitas ekonominya dengan kota-Kota di sekitarnya, yaitu Kota Maros (Kabupaten Maros), Kota Sungguminasa (Kabupaten Gowa), dan Kota Takalar (Kabupaten Takalar).Hasil pengukuran dan penilaian dengan menggunakan koefisien korelasi tunggal menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang mantap antara sistem perkotaan dengan fenomena kota besar dan kota kecil.

Primacy of a city or urban areas not only due to one reason (monocausal), but by several factors. Trigger factors of Makassar as a primate city in addition to historical factors, is the fact still remains the existence of "The Law of the Primate City". Primate city does not happen only in national scale but also in regional/provincial scale, Makassar as a primate city not only by domination of population but also by the influence of Makassar to other cities and to hinterland area. Study from development town history of South Sulawesi supports fact that since the first, Makassar still become growth center for the region of South Sulawesi.In system of cities of South Sulawesi province, cities that have a high hierarchy looks pursed around Makassar. The trend indicates occurrence of conurbations in Makassar city and surrounding region, known as Mamminasata. Makassar City can not stand alone but has became an integral part of the economic activity with neighboring towns, such as Maros, Sungguminasa (Gowa), and Takalar.Results of measurement and assesment using a single correlation coefficient showed that there was an established relationship between system of cities and the phenomenon of big cities and small towns."
