"Tindak tutur menolak dalam bahasa Jepang pada umumnya disampaikan secara tidak langsung dengan moda verbal. Namun, tampaknya anak-anak Jepang tidak hanya menggunakan moda verbal pada saat menolak. Berdasarkan pengamatan awal, tampaknya anak-anak Jepang menggunakan moda verbal dan nonverbal pada saat menolak. Oleh karena itu, variasi moda verbal dan nonverbal menolak pada anak menarik untuk dicermati. Permasalahan penelitian ini adalah multimodalitas respons menolak dalam bahasa Jepang oleh anak usia 2–4 tahun. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menjelaskan respons anak ketika menolak, baik secara verbal maupun nonverbal. Data penelitian ini adalah 7 video respons menolak anak ketika orang tua meminta anaknya untuk melakukan sesuatu. Video itu diperoleh dari acara reality show yang berjudul Hajimete no Otsukai. Temuan penelitian ini adalah pola multimodalitas respons menolak, yaitu (i) respons tuturan menolak disertai moda nonverbal mengangguk, menunduk, menangis, menatap ibu, (ii) respons tuturan menolak disertai moda nonverbal menunduk, menatap ayah, melihat ke kanan, (iii) respons tuturan menolak disertai moda nonverbal menunduk, menatap ayah, menggelengkan kepala, (iv) respons tuturan menolak disertai moda nonverbal menunduk, menangis, melihat ayah, menggelengkan kepala, melihat ke kiri, bersandar pada ayah, (v) respons tuturan menolak disertai moda nonverbal menangis, mengusap tangan, menarik ibu, (vi) respons tuturan menolak disertai moda nonverbal melihat ayah, membuka dan menutup pintu, mundur selangkah, (vii) respons tuturan menolak disertai moda nonverbal melihat ibu, melihat ke kanan dan kiri, berjalan pulang. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa anak-anak Jepang cenderung menolak dengan menggabungkan moda verbal dan nonverbal.

Refusal speech act in Japanese is generally conveyed indirectly with the verbal mode. However, it seems that Japanese children do not only use verbal modes when refusing. Based on initial observations, it seems that Japanese children use both verbal and nonverbal modes when refusing. Therefore, the variety of verbal and nonverbal modes of refusing by children is interesting to observe. The problem of this study is the multimodality of refusal responses in Japanese by 2–4 years old children. The purpose of this study is to explain children's responses when refusing, both verbally and nonverbally. The data of this study are 7 videos of children's refusal responses when parents ask their children to do something. The videos were obtained from a reality show called Hajimete no Otsukai.

The findings of this study are multimodality patterns of refusal responses, (i) refusal speech response with nonverbal modes of nodding, looking down, crying, looking at mother, (ii) refusal speech response with nonverbal modes of looking down, looking at father, looking to the right, (iii) refusal speech response with nonverbal modes of looking down, looking at father, shaking the head, (iv) refusal speech response with nonverbal modes of looking down, crying, looking at father, shaking the head, looking to the left, leaning on the father, (v) refusal speech response with nonverbal mode of crying, rubbing hands, pulling mother, (vi) refusal speech response with nonverbal mode of looking at father, opening and closing the door, taking a step back, (vii) refusal speech response with nonverbal mode of looking at mother, looking to the right and left, walking home. This shows that Japanese children tend to refuse by combining verbal and nonverbal modes."
