This thesis discusses the concepts and practices of volunteers in non-formal schools in the DKI Jakarta area in an effort to empower children from poor families and students' perceptions of the learning process in non-formal schools. In this thesis, it describes the learning activities contained in non-formal schools where there are children as students and volunteers who function as teachers. This study focuses on a process of how teachers practice learning methods for their students in accordance with the meaning and nature of the values inherent in the name of the school. This study, using ethnographic methods, in addition to researching, the researcher also conducted in-depth interviews with several teaching volunteers and children who were students at the school. The results of this study indicate that volunteers who function as school teachers are not limited to providing knowledge, but also trying to practice educational values without having to resort to violence, without discrimination and trying to protect their students without giving up. The children who participate in the school feel that the volunteers are able to implement learning values that are oriented towards the needs of students in learning. Besides that, the most important thing is how the teacher succeeds in transmitting knowledge so that finally the student is able to excel in subjects that are within the scope of formal school. Volunteers who function as teachers often face various challenges, such as students who are difficult to manage, students who have difficulty understanding the learning material, and noisy students and difficult to manage during the learning session. Even so, the teachers did not give up and gave up hope to educate and transmit knowledge to their students. Teachers have their own learning methods so that their students understand the lessons given. In these non-formal schools, in their learning activities, there is no punishment by the teachers when their students have difficulty understanding a subject. Regarding the perception of non-formal schools, the learning atmosphere is very pleasant, because according to them, the teachers are very kind, friendly, and understanding towards their students. When students are able to complete their obligations to work on problems from a subject, so, as a token of appreciation, the students were given gifts by the teacher in the form of food and soft drinks. One of the most important things from this research is knowing how children can comfortably carry out learning sessions which in turn make this school stand and are needed by children. With the existence of this school, children are able to behave better and can better understand the subject matter provided in formal schools, so that they are able to excel and compete with other children who are more fortunate than them. This is in accordance with the meaning of the name of the non-formal school, which is to educate students to have a winning mentality"
