"The research is done by using qualitative research. The writer discusses five type of language functions based on the theory proposed by Finocchiaro and Brumfit, such as persona functional, interpersonal function, referential function, and imaginative function. The data is taken from Jakarta Post, and this is a qualitative research. The data are 4 articles of economics. In this study, the most dominant type of language function id referential function. It means most of the content of the news is used mostly for sharing information. The writer also advice English teacher to be able to teach the student using articles (economical, history, sports, medical, etc0 so the students can be enriched with kinds of terms in their English vocabulary.

"Majalah adalah salah satu media masa terbesar yang dapat memuat cerita pendek, gambar, ilustrasi atau fitur lainnya yang merefleksikan karakter dari majalah itu sendiri. Majalah sering digunakan sebagai bahan rujukan oleh para pembaca, sebagai contoh majalah ELLE. Majalah ELLE adalah salah satu majalah fashion wanita ternama yang berasal dari Perancis dan sudah mendunia. Dengan menggunakan metode studi pustaka melalui pendekatan deskriptif-komparatif, penulis akan menganalisis penggunaan bahasa dalam judul sampul majalah ELLE (Edisi Indonesia dan Belanda), dan pengaruh budaya yang tampak pada sampul majalah-majalah tersebut. Magazine is one of the major mass media that can contain short stories, pictures, reviews, illustrations or other features that characterize and reflect the classification and character of the magazine itself. Magazines are often used as refrence by the reader, for example the well-known ELLE Magazine is a leading women's fashion magazine that is originated from France and has managed to become a global magazine. Using the literature study method through the descriptive-comparative approach, firstly the usage of language in the titles are analyzed. The result of comparison between the two magazines shows that the use of various figures of speech and culture play an important role in attracting readers attention."

ABSTRAKKata yang kita temui dan gunakan dalam berkomunikasi memiliki makna leksikal dan kontekstual. Makna leksikal merupakan makna kata yang sebenarnya yang belum mengalami penyesuaian dengan konteks, sedangkan makna kontekstual adalah makna kata yang yang terikat dengan konteks situasi dalam suatu peristiwa bahasa. Ada kata-kata khusus yang digunakan pada satu topik, kegiatan, dan bidang tertentu tetapi juga dapat digunakan pada topik, kegiatan, atau bidang lainnya sehingga makna leksikal dan kontekstual kata tersebut menjadi berbeda-beda. Jurnal ini membahas mengenai makna leksikal dan makna kontekstual pada kata-kata khusus yang digunakan dalam artikel tentang make-up mata di situs Rubriek.nl, serta bagaimana penggunaan kata-kata khusus tersebut pada topik, kegiatan, dan bidang lain. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah dari sembilan kata khusus yang digunakan pada artikel make-up mata, terdapat lima kata yang juga digunakan pada konteks atau bidang lain. Kata-kata tersebut memiliki makna leksikal dan kontekstual yang berbeda-beda satu dengan yang lain. Makna leksikal pada kata khusus dalam topik make-up mata dan topik lain berbeda disesuaikan dengan konteks, bentuk dan peruntukannya sehingga menghasilkan makna kontekstual.

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini menganalisis musik, sebagai produk budaya, menggambarkan keadaan masyarakat pada saat music tersebut dibuat. Teori Systemic Functional Analysis diterapkan untuk menemukan tema kedua lagu yang dianalisis, yaitu : Industrial Disease karya Dire Strait dan Life?s for the Living karya Passenger. Menggunakan metode tinjauan pustaka, lirik kedua lagu dianalisis menggunakan teori Transitivity. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa tema kedua lagu sesuai dengan keadaan sosio-kultural ketika kedua lagu tersebut diciptakan.

Systemic Functional Linguistic Theory is applied in order to find the theme of the two songs which are analyzed : Industrial Disease by Dire Strait and Life's for the Living by Passenger's . ABSTRAKSalah satu bentuk media cetak yang digunakan oleh masyarakat adalah surat kabar. Setiap surat kabar menyampaikan berita dengan cara yang sama atau pun berbeda. NRC Handelsblad dan De Telegraaf merupakan surat kabar Belanda. Struktur kalimat dalam dua surat kabar tersebut merupakan salah satu perbedaan yang dapat dilihat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan struktur kalimat pada artikel NRC Handelsblad dan De Telegraaf. Sumber data diambil dari dua artikel surat kabar yang dibatasi dengan topik Dierendag. Berdasarkan hasil analisis ditemukan bahwa dalam artikel NRC Handelsblad banyak digunakan anak kalimat, khususnya beknopte bijzin (anak kalimat yang diringkas), sedangkan dalam artikel De Telegraaf kebanyakan dari kalimatnya adalah kalimat tunggal. Hal tersebut terlihat dari struktur masing-masing kalimat yang ditentukan berdasarkan fungsi konstituen seperti subjek, predikat, objek, dan keterangan.
ABSTRACTNewspaper is one of the most popular printed publications used by the people. Each newspaper may deliver the news differently or similarly to one another. NRC Handelsblad and De Telegraaf are Dutch newspapers. One of the most noticeable differences between the two newspapers is the structure of the sentence. The purpose of this research is to discover the structure of the sentence on the NRC Handelsblad and De Telegraaf articles. The sources of this research are two newspaper articles restricted to the topic of Dierendag. Based on the analysis conducted, it is found that articles from NRC Handelsblad use clauses, especially beknopte bijzin (summarized clause), while articles from De Telegraaf use mostly single sentences. The evident is drawn from each structure of the sentences which is determined based on the constituent function such as subject, predicate, object and complement., Newspaper is one of the most popular printed publications used by the people. ABSTRAKMakalah nonseminar ini difokuskan pada penelitian di bidang linguistik, yaitu fungsi augmentatifa atau perubahan pada bentuk kata pada kata benda yang dapat mengalami peningkatan makna. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan cara mencari makna kata dengan menggunakan kamus dan sumber-sumber data lainnya, serta melakukan analisis terhadap unsur-unsur substantiva yang ada dalam buku Michael Lohde 2006: 64 yaitu Wortbildung des modernen Deutschen yang bertujuan untuk membantu pembaca agar mengerti dan mengetahui unsur-unsur apa saja yang dapat menjadikan suatu kata itu mengalami peningkatan bentuk kata. Hasil yang didapat adalah bahwa augmentatifa adalah suatu pembesaran bentuk yang ditandai oleh adanya sebuah prefiks atau sufiks dan ada beberapa aturan dalam membentuk kata augmentatif pada bahasa Jerman.Kata kunci: augmentatifa, substantiva, bentuk kata, peningkatan, klasifikasi makna
ABSTRACTtThid non seminar paper is focused on research in the field of linguistics, namely augmentatifa function or the increase in the form of words to nouns that can be increased. This study uses qualitative descriptive method by looking for the meaning of words using dictionaries and sources of other data, and do an analysis of the elements substantiva in the book of Michael Lohde 2006 64 Wortbildung des modernen Deutschen, that aims to help readers in order to understand and know what elements can make a word that has increased form words. The result is that an enlarged form augmentatifa is characterized by the presence of a prefix or suffix and there are some rules in forming augmentative word in the German language.Keywords augmentative, substantive, the words, the increase, the meaning classification"

"Penelitian mengenai identitas melalui narasi tertulis seperti pada memoar dan biografi sudah populer di bidang linguistik selama beberapa dekade. Dalam tulisan ini, memoar terkenal yang ditulis oleh Michelle Robinson Obama, Becoming (2018), diteliti dengan tujuan untuk menganalisis konstruksi identitas. Memoar ini secara spesifik dipilih karena narasi personal yang kuat dan cerita yang menginspirasi, dimana menceritakan perjuangan seorang wanita Afrika-Amerika melawan diskriminasi di Amerika Serikat. Tulisan ini berfokus pada bagian tertentu dari memoar, yaitu Becoming Us, yang dianalisis melalui pendekatan DHA (Analisis Wacana Historis) yang dipelopori oleh Ruth Wodak. Pendekatan ini menyediakan beberapa strategi diskursif, beberapa di antaranya adalah referensi/nominasi dan predikasi yang diaplikasikan untuk menganalisis fitur-fitur linguistik yang menyediakan representasi positif, negatif, dan netral dari aktor sosial. Semua representasi yang ada nantinya berkontribusi untuk mengonstruksi identitas budaya dan ras Michelle Obama. Kebaruan dari penelitian ini terdapat pada pendekatan yang lebih linguistik dan konteks sejarah sebagai usaha untuk meneliti identitas.
Researches on identity through written narrative such as memoir and biography have been popular in the linguistics field over the decades. In this paper, a famous memoir written by Michelle Robinson Obama, Becoming (2018), is examined as a means to analyze the construction of identities. This particular memoir is chosen because of the strong personal narrative and inspiring story which recounts the struggle of the African American woman against discrimination in the United States. This paper focuses on the selected section of the memoir, Becoming Us, which is examined through the Discourse-Historical Analysis (DHA) pioneered by Ruth Wodak. This approach offers several discursive strategies, some of which are referential/nomination and predication that are applied to analyze the linguistic features which provide positive, negative, and neutral representations of the social actor. All of these representations then contribute to construct Michelle Obama’s cultural and racial identities. The novelty of this research lies in a more linguistic approach and historical context as the endeavors to examine the identities."
