Clark, Timothy R.
"The degrading environment of the planet is something that touches everyone. This book offers an introductory overview of literary and cultural criticism that concerns environmental crisis in some form. Both as a way of reading texts and as a theoretical approach to culture more generally, 'ecocriticism' is a varied and fast-changing set of practices which challenges inherited thinking and practice in the reading of literature and culture. This introduction defines what ecocriticism is, its methods, arguments and concepts, and will enable students to look at texts in a wholly new way. Boxed sections explain key critical terms and contemporary debates in the field with 'hands-on' examples and comparisons. Timothy Clark's thoughtful approach makes this an ideal first encounter with environmental readings of literature."

Besides being a means of industry related to society, mass media, such as advertisements, are often used to show events that occur in society worldwide. This research analyzes two advertisements from German Amazon Prime entitled Rapunzel braucht keinen Prinzen and Kleopatra hat einen Sinneswandel, which are based on the legendary fairy tales of the Grimm brothers and the historical story of the Queen of Egypt. These two advertisements portrayed deconstructive images of the characters Rapunzel and Cleopatra. This research uses textual analyses and semiotics methods to analyze how Prime’s advertisements deconstruct the image of Rapunzel and Cleopatra. This research finding shows that the women’s images constructed by the media are contextual."

The Western has proven itself to be a massively influential film genre within the history of Hollywood, leaving its mark on the industry for decades since its first arrival. However, the genre has found itself to be in such a declining state over the years that it no longer holds a position in the industry. Nowadays, new forms of this genre have introduced themselves as a reflective vessel to look back upon the golden years and to comment on its original roots. This research examines the way these new storytelling approaches serve as the foundation for contemporary films to make remarks on the Western, primarily Classic and Revisionist Western, from several perspectives found within the cinematic frame. Through this analysis, it is argued that it is possible to obtain interpretations on how different filmmakers voice their opinion on the state of the genre in contemporary times by analyzing their utilization of the Post-Heyday Western concept in No Country for Old Men (2007) and Logan (2017), as well as how it correlates to certain thematic discussions revolving around aging."

Bauman, Zygmunt, 1925-2017
""In this new book Zygmunt Bauman and Riccardo Mazzeo examine the contentious issue of the relation between literature (and the arts in general) and sociology (or, more generally, a branch of the humanities claiming scientific status). While many commentators see literature and sociology as radically different vocations, Bauman and Mazzeo argue that they are bound together by a common purpose and a shared subject matter. Despite the many differences in terms of their methods and their ways of presenting their findings, novels and sociological texts are not at cross-purposes. Indeed, it is precisely their differences that make them at once indispensable to each other and mutually complementary. The writers of novels and of sociological texts may explore their world from different perspectives, seeking and producing different types of 'data', but their products bear the unmistakable marks of their shared origin. They feed each other and depend on each other in terms of their agenda, their discoveries and the contents of their messages. In a world characterized by the continuous search for new sensations and the fetishism of consumption, they bring fundamental existential questions back to the public agenda. Literature and sociology reveal the truth of the human condition only when they stay in one another's company, remaining attentive to each other's findings and engaged in a continuous dialogue. For only together can they rise to the challenging task of untangling and laying bare the complex intertwining of biography and history as well as of individual and society that totality we are constantly shaping while being shaped by it"-"
