"This article attempts to give a brief picture about the genre and themes in the
Dutch-Indies Literature from the VOC period. During the VOC-period, more
than six months was needed to embark on a journey by sea from the Netherlands
to Batavia. Undertaking this journey meant encountering many obstacles which
occurred through the work of man as well as nature. In addition, a successful
landing on the shores of the East did not always ensure a friendly reception. Due
to these obstacles which they encountered, only a small number of those who
had set sail from Europe were able to return home safely. Most of those who
managed to survive this long and dangerous journey to the land of spices, finally
chose to stay and start a new life in the East. Some of these men, in an effort to
establish their new life, were able to make contact and build relationships with
the local women. This paved the way for the emergence of the Mestis culture,
in which we find the elements of East and West."

ABSTRACT
In 1942 when Japan took control of the Dutch East Indies, a decree was issued to include all Europeans including the Dutch in the Dutch East Indies into the camp. The captivity of the Dutch in Japanese prison camps became one of the themes in Dutch Indies literature. The book Hollands-Indische Verhalen (1974) by Margaretha Ferguson is a book that contains this theme. This collection of short stories has seven stories about Japanese prison camps. Out of seven stories, three stories titled Piano Muziek, Een Herinnering, and Eeuwig-Even will be used. These three short stories tell three different women that being held in Japanese internment camps. The study was conducted by analyzing three main Dutch female characters with qualitative methods and the assessment of intrinsic and extrinsic elements of literature. To help the research, psychology approaches are also used. From this study, it was seen that the three main Dutch female characters who were held captive occupied themselves to forget for a moment from the fact that they were held captive to obtain temporary peace and strength to survive in Japanese internment camps."
