"Summary: The Future of Museum and Gallery Design explores new research and practice in museum design. Placing a specific emphasis on social responsibility, in its broadest sense, the book emphasises the need for a greater understanding of the impact of museum design in the experiences of visitors, in the manifestation of the vision and values of museums and galleries, and in the shaping of civic spaces for culture in our shared social world. The chapters included in the book propose a number of innovative approaches to museum design and museum-design research. Collectively, contributors plead for more open and creative ways of making museums, and ask that museums recognize design as a resource to be harnessed towards a form of museum-making that is culturally located and makes a significant contribution to our personal, social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Such an approach demands new ways of conceptualizing museum and gallery design, new ways of acknowledging the potential of design, and new, experimental, and research-led approaches to the shaping of cultural institutions internationally. The Future of Museum and Gallery Design should be of great interest to academics and postgraduate students in the fields of museum studies, gallery studies, and heritage studies, as well as architecture and design, who are interested in understanding more about design as a resource in museums. It should also be of great interest to museum and design practitioners and museum leaders. "

"This book describes two different museums using construction technology as the common language that brings architecture and engineering together. The first is the Museum of the Ibere Camargo Foundation at Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, by Álvaro Siza and GOP, and the second is the Coach Museum at Lisbon in Portugal, by Paulo Mendes da Rocha and AFAconsult. Both projects put special emphasis on the design process as a construction language, achieved by a close collaboration promoted by the integrated design methodology that both teams follow. Besides its importance from an architectural and urban point of view, these two buildings suggest interesting topics that are present in current building research such as sustainability, the construction of façades with a heavy use of unrendered white concrete and the integration of all the technical infrastructure needed to build a successful high-tech museum.
ABSTRACT Ranggawarsita Museum is a provincial museum in Central Java that was built through a museum rehabilitation and construction project. The construction of the museum began in 1975 and it was opened for public gradually since 1983 and 1989. Ranggawarsita Museum has collections from all over Central Java, including statues/arca, gold, fossils, money, holy books, batik, traditional clothes, and traditional weapons. Ranggawarsita museum was built with the largest fundings among provincial museum project initiated by The New Order government in the period of 1975 to 1990. The New Order government put special emphasis on Ranggawarsita Museum through a storyline that inherited memories of the New Order's greatness in Indonesian development. Ranggawarsita Museum constructs historical narrative of The New Order which are manifested in the storyline and the arrangement of collections. There are two buildings which become the direct representation of The New Order, namely Building C and Building D.  Some collections displayed there including diorama, weapons, paintings of several figures, and war flags. Collections displayed in those two buildings represent the New Order narrative which tends to be militaristic and accentuates the physical struggle. The narrative of the New Order in Ranggawarsita Museum's display storyline continued despite the collapse of the New Order in 1998. It can be seen in the museum's diorama of Indonesia's historical journey which still contains the narrative of the New Order. In 2002 the Regional Autonomy Law was applied in the country, but there were not many changes to the storyline narrative of Ranggawarsita Museum. Reformation era is a period of change and several museums, such as the National Monument, have replaced the narrative of the New Order into some other opened narratives. But it did not happened at the Ranggawarsita Museum which maintained the New Order narrative until 2009.
